You want the Asus A7A266, t-bird 1.2ghz, get the 266mhz FSB one. Those 2 will cost you 300$ shiped at newegg.com, and they are retailed versions, so you get a heatsink and fan. If you want to overclock you will need a better fan, I'd recomend the OCZ Gladiator with the Delta fan, 35$ at http://ocz.safeshopper.com, its the delta so it will be loud but it gives great temps. The A7A266 is a DDR mobo, so you will want a 256mb DDR, get this at www.crucial.com, people have great sucess stories of overclocking this stuff, and its cheap. You at about 375$ w/ shipping, not counting the gladiator. If you want that gladiator fan add 40$. Now for the graphics card, the Geforce II Ultra is by todays standerds the best card out, even beats the geforce 3, eventually the geforce 3 will be better, but not till some newer games come out. Plus the ultra is about 200$ cheaper... You can grab the Elsa Gladiac Ultra at www.newegg.com for 250$ with shipping, that puts you at 625$, w/out the OCZ Gladiator, ok so I'm a little over =) If that 25$ is really a problem, get the Asus A7V instead of the A7A266, and regular SDRAM rather then DDR. A7V in my opinion is best non DDR board out. BTW, these are just sugestions, dont take my opinion to strongly, read up on everything before you buy anything and decide if its really what u want.
I'm on the same budget and will be buying soon. I'm thinking about a DDR mb, maybe the FIC AD11 for $110, Crucial PC2100 256MB for $62, a 1Ghz Tbird (plan to overclock) for $125 and all the rest of the money goes into the video card. Just enough left for a Geforce2 Ultra for around $250. Add in about $50 for a CPU cooler and shipping and your at $600. The video card is the most important thing if you are a game and like to play 32 bit color will all the eye-candy features turned up.

I myself once had a voodoo 3 and for the games of yesteryear (is that a word hmmmm...) it was fine but when i got Tribes2 i absolutely sucked i am now using a Hercules 3-D II Mx which really seems to be working for me it is a good video card for people like us who are on a budget
