what is going on? whats this opteron and 64 and fx? what happend to having 1 name, like xeon?
whats the differences, and why on earth is the 'super 64bit cpu' getting hammered by xeon by up to 3 times????
some one gimme some idea of what is going on plz

the initial A64 is more or less exactly the same as the current opterons running registered DDR333. A64 will be 754 pins and will be running on single channel DDR.

Those are benchmarks you see on the front page could be biased you never know i've seen the results go the other way.. till more benchmarks are relased i'll take anything with a grain of salt

They used xeons in dual configs, and everything else is single cpu. It's obviously a biased review, otherwise they wouldn't have done that.

hmm
is the opteron running on the same idea as athlon, as in it does ****loads of work in less cycles, or is it going like the pentiums in pure mhz?

Opteron: server chip, supports up to 8-way setups
Athlon FX: Desktop version of the Opteron as of now, single processing only, but dual-channel RAM support.
Athlon64: Single-channel RAM desktop chip.

All extend the integer pipeline to 64-bit, have on-die memory controllers, and, in 64-bit long mode, have 8 additional GPRs.

does the opteron perform better than the other two? eg rendering, or is it built specifically to work with server proggys?

Umm... no. The Athlon FX and Opteron are about as identical as they could get. The only difference is unofficial support for DDR 400 in the FX and MP versions of the Opteron (244, and such). THe FX and Opteron both have dual channel memory, otherwise they all have the same core, ive or take a few HT links.

here is from fastest to slowest in speed, Athlon 64 FX, Opteron, Athlon 64. The reason behind the athlon 64fx being faster then the opteron when identical is the fact that the dual channel PC3200 ddr is a good bit faster then dual channel PC2700 ddr, and this is has proven in a few reviews that it can help quite a bit in some spots, and do squat in others, but for the most part, the fx is the fastest desktop cpu on earth.
