If I were at home, I could probably find my old 2400 baud modem (I'm sure I have it in the box and most likely with the documentation) but unfortunately I won't be there until Christmas maybe.

Rockwell/Conexant? Rockwell once sent me a thing on how to build a 2400 bps modem from their chips, complete with the circuit board pattern.

check local computer stores. i find that most of them hold on to overly outdated equiment thinking one day they could sell it to a smuck. what ever.

I don't recall there being any 2800 bps modems. AFAIK there were 50, 75, 110, 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 14.4K 28K 33.3K 56K.
Maybe this will be interesting for you, it's all I could find...

I've only used a device as lowly as a 2400 baud modem I got an old Amstrad one back in 97 and tried it out. It was a little more advanced than most 2400s would have been because it had MNP5 compression and error correction, so could manage a stunning 1K a second throughput on text based web pages. I had a real awful 14.4 a couple of years later that didn't have a fast UART (8250 instead of 16550) and had no compression or anything, and it seemed to me to be only as fast as that old 2400 because I was only geting 1.2K on it most of the time. Also had a good 14.4 that had hardware compression and got around 6-7K on text and 3-4K on downloads, which was better than some generic 28Ks.
I've got an old RadioShack TRS80 modem that uses an acoustic coupler, it does up to 300 baud I think. I bought it just a year or so ago to mess around with, but have not done much with it yet. I was planning to convert it so I could use it for acoustic coupling a faster modem, for hotel room and on the road (payphone) email checks.
