Whats so special about it, isnt it just a way to test stability?

How come some of you guys have a folding team in your sig, am i missing out on something here?

I'm taking a shot in the dark here:
The more CPU resources are used, the more power it consumes. The more power it consumes, the higher your electric bill is. That "extra" money which comes from you by folding is "donated" indirectly to help scientists find a cure for cancer (?)

That's the impression I have

Someone correct me if I am wrong :)

Check out our folding page HERE (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?forumid=21) if you have not yet.

Plus I have a feeling this will be moved there.

Ehh wrong on both guesses so far ;) Folding can be used as a stability test but there are better programs out there for that.

Folding@Home is a distributed computing project that is conducted through stanford university. Your machine downloads work units and reports the results back to the server. Go check out the F@H stickies for more info. Then download and START FOLDING :)

I thought it had something to do with finding a cure for a disease... 0/1.. Oh well :)

It does. Read the FAQ and it will explain it better than I can. Simply put though the project is trying to find cures to diseases that are caused by misfolded proteins. The work units that are downloaded are basically simulations I guess you would call them. The project is studying why proteins misfold. The data collected through the project helps the researchers. Its not donating money however.

Ahhh I see. Thanks for clearing it up

it definitely will raise your electric bill though running your processor at full power for most if not all of the day

finding folding patterns of proteins is certainly a way to understand some disease processes btw.

Actually, people have calculated the cost of running an average computer 24/7. Without the monitor, I think it turned out to cost around $5 a month. I don't have the exact numbers, but it was quite minimal.
