I don't know how cheap you're intending to find them for, but ebgames.com has the half life platinum collection for $36.99. I thought about getting it myself sometime.

Halflife is now freeware. Although you need steam but it will let you play halflife and its mods for free.

Actually steam asks for a CD key the first time you (try to) play HL or any of the mods.

There are two different Platinum Collections, one has Blue Shift and the other doesn't (I think that's the expan/mod that's different). Target (my place of employment) sells the P.C. without Blue Shift for $29.99, and hte one with it, for $39.99.

So the big question, is the "freeware" usable or not? It's almost 800mb for all of the games, is it gonna work? :)

Well, I can't help you...

I downloaded the entire thing, 723mbs of it, the download finishes, I check the file, its only 400+mbs. I can't figure it out. It's an executable, but I can't do anything with it, its not returning their "desired" file size. I hope you have better luck.

ummm....did I miss something?

when did HL become freeware? As far as I know, you still have to pay for it in order to play it, steam or otherwise......unless I missed that announcement....

Yeah DaveSauce I believe you are correct, I downloaded steam and when I installed it, it automatically used my cd key from the previous installation of half-life. It also transferred all my settings and custom maps. On a side note, if you purchase the platinum collection, you recieve 2 cd keys, one from half-life and one from retail counter-strike. Both are really just half-life cd keys. Also I don't have any major complaints about steam or cs 1.6. Sure there are some bugs, but the nice thing is that its all auto update now, so the bugs can be fixed without a whole new version release. The friends idea is cool too. Its nice being able to find you pals who are playing and where. So far I'm happy with it.

I thought you could download counter strike for free.... or do you have to pay for it now?
