That's a good price on the Sennheiser if they are the same or close to the HD280 Pro. We sell the HD280PRO for $99 at samash.com

the explanation at amazon clearly says it indeed is HD-280 pro .. now I"m confused .. is this a pro or not?
i wan't aware they had a hd280 non pro, do they?

there is no HD 280 (non-pro) there's only the "HD 280 Pro" (black), "HD 280 SILVER" (silver in color but same as the "Pro") and the "HD 280 -13" (300 Ohm version).
both Grado & Sennheiser headphones are supposed to be excellent. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD540II which are sooooooooo comfortable.
But remember that the HD280Pros are a closed back headphone which are good for keeping sound out but are not quite as good as open headphones.

sweet deal mam i love you i have been loking around and trying to find a cheap price for the 280 pros that the place doesn't kill the deal with shipping charges thanks alot
just got myself the 280... been looking at it for 85 for a while.. nice to save 15 bucks
i paid 80 for them a few weeks ago, they are great buys, i highly reccomend the 280pros, and i dont think open headphones are better then closed, you hear so much more, and it sounds better as ther are viritually no outside noise to interfere

Yeah, why would open be better for sound quality. They would be better if you need to hear whats going on around you, but your music is leaking out while the outside world is leaking in. I don't see how that could be better for sound quality.
Btw, great find. Personally, i think the 280s are better, but if those were SR80s then they would be my first choice.

I'm trying out my new HD-280 today and the noise cancelling is just what I wanted for use at work. I'm reserving final judgment on them until they've been broken in but so far I'm pleased with them. I'm also considering buying the Grados for use at home. If anyone bought the Grados, please share your first impressions of it's performance. Thanks.

im telling you, what ever you do, DO NOT buy grado headphones. i did and it was the worst mistake i had ever made. after i got my SR 80s, every other peice of audio equipment i owned instantly sounded like total crap as nothing could hold a candle to the might SR80s.
i ended up having to rebuild my intire home and car system with high quality components so that i did not cringe on hearing just how poor they acutaly sounded.
dont be fooled by their low price!!! the will cost you much much more $$$ down the road when you become adicted to Hi-Fi.
;)
cstarritt, nice post on the SR80's. They really must be "that" good for music, but I'm guessing a little too good (revealing) for gaming, movies and TV?
i think that grados are ugly as sin. not only that but they are very uncomfortable compared to the sennheisers which cover the whole ear. i'm a sennheiser open air fan all the way.
if you don't have really nice equipment u're not going to hear the difference between these pretty cheap HD-280's and their top of the line HD-600 which are usually used by classical musicians or sound recording studios
cstarritt

the grado sr80 sounds everybit as nice as the HD-600, but like you said they dont feel as nice and they do look ugly. but they cost 100 vs the hd-600 costing 500, so i can live with a pair of cans that areny super nice feeling and use the extra $$$ for some computer parts.
and yes, after you have them for a few months you will start to hear the differance. trust me, i speak from experiance.

ordered hd280. too bad i wont be home until 12-31. they said estimate shiping on dec 29 and arrival on 1-2 to 1-6. usually its way earlier. like 6 days earlier than expected. darnit this is the one thing i wish came late. i hate pickup too because fedex is 15 min from me but if its usps the post office is close :D
hope these are worth it. i was considering sr80 but the price was too good to pass!
I've had my HD-280 playing from my Denon 1802 receiver now for 4 days breaking them in. I bought them over the Grado SR-80 for their sound isolation and comfort for use at work, but now I'm not so sure I'll want to do without them at home.
What I like about them: 1) great sound isolation, 2) very deep, strong bass that can really pound, 3) regular guitar and lower strings sound great, 4) inexpensive, and 5) comfortable (after stretching them on a box for 4 days).
What I don't like about them: 1) upper mids and lower highs are weak/thin compared to the strong bass, 2) the highest highs are too strong (typical), 3) mens and lower women's voices can sound too low and at times muddy, while higher voices are a touch thin, 4) lowest lows are not well defined, and 5) echoes are greatly exaggerated which mostly hurts dialog but adds to music and special effects.
Recommendations: Gaming = 9/10, DVD = 8/10, CD = 6/10 (critical listening), TV listening varies very widely from intollerable 1/10 to 7/10, overall = 7/10. Although in some respects I am disappointed, in others I am quite surprised by its performance and for only $60. For critical music listening and high(er) fidelity, the Grado SR-80 has to be the way to go for $80.

Funny enough I told this deal to my friend before Christmas and told him I was going to order them probably closer to the ending of the month. Couldn't pass a $59.99 "Free Shipping" deal on Sennheiser headphones which are awesome. Sure enough out of no where he gives me a present and they are these Headphones which he bought straight from the Amazon deal!!! Just tried them out and I'm pretty impressed, They do take some time to burn in like most speakers/headphones but they seem to get better and better "Bass" wise after playing some Bass Songs.
I was considering the Grado's because I've heard they sound a bit better.....When I actually took a look at them I couldn't believe how horrible they looked I mean COME ON! Worse headphone design I've ever seen, There are World War 2 headphones that look better. Anyways if you want looks/performance go with the Sennhesiers, If you want a pair of extremely ugly headphones with better performance go with the Grado's for some extra $$$. I haven't tried on the Grado's but the HD-280's put zero strain on my head.

Sennheisers or zalman surround sound 5.1's?
I honestly don't remember which brand if it was Zalman, but I've read up on a lot of reviews on 5.1 Virtual Headphones and almost everyone has very little positive things to say about them. I guess it kind of throws of the spectrum/positioning of sound and sounds a bit strange. I'd look into it before buying them.....I can verify the Sennheisers have excellent sound quality for the price.

sennheiser all the way, which model sennheiser are you looking at?
I just sent my order for the HD-280s in. Hope they come soon.
Anyhow, I was reading a review for the Zalmans and they said that the surround effect was great, but the sound quality was less than desirable, mostly because of the strangely shaped design.
I believe the review came from some UK site.
these 280's are good for gaming and stuff... but for audiophiles.. gotta go for something like the hd-580 or hd-600
my hd280s will come tomorrow from amazon. perfect timing since i just came back from vacation today.
one question. i never knew anything about burning in with headphones. how do i do this? ive seen "sound benchmarking tools." dont know if i use that or if i just play a regular radio channel plugged in for 24 hours.
any suggestions?

just play some decent rock/pop (something loud.. ie no classical) at about 5-10% above your normal listening volume. and leave them sitting on your desk playing whenever you can. keep this up for about 20-30 hours and they should be sufficiently broken in. there will still be changes occuring afterwards but very subtle.

I recall reading somewhere it takes 2 to 4 days to break them in. And one suggestion I read was to play radio static, but I played radio, TV, CDs and DVDs for 4 days at louder than normal volumes. I could definitely hear an improvement after 2 days.

I bought a pair of the Grado SR-60s two years ago and they gave me awesome gaming performance. The sound quality on these babies is AWESOME, nothing I've owned before or after has matched them. I was playing Quake 3 around the time I got them and the clarity of sound within the game gave me wallhacking skillz(like hearing exactly where someone else is on the map, not just a general direction).
However they are padded, which isn't as comfortable as over-the-ear style headphones. The cord is nice and long, but thick, so carrying them around with a walkman isn't the best. Also about a year after use I noticed a crackling sound in the left side. This could have been remedied because they were still under warranty but I never got around to mailing them in. Oh well. Still a great pair of headphones for the sound quality...
JUST GOT MY 280s
put them on adn they look very funny and are huger than expected
tested them and the treble was nice but the BASS WAS DISSAPPOINTING!!! noooooo it was pretty weak sauce. o well ill try to break them in as other people have suggested. i hope i get use to them.
real music isn't supposed to be boomy with the bass. perhaps you are just used to headphones that overemphasize the bass?
my HD580's have lower extension than my car subs but its very controlled and smooth instead of boomy and flagrant.

i used to think huge bass was nice (with my koss ur30's) but after one listen to the grado sr80's at a local store here i knew i had been totaly missing the whole point of the music.
the more yoiu listen to those hd280's the more you will appreciate the finer details it brings out over cheap boomy cans. my grados dont have the most powerful bass, but the frequency response goes all the way down and it has a nice punch to it vs a rumble. its REAL bass, not fake bass.

Very good point Maxvla, I work with Home Audio and some Car Audio all the time because of my job but I get many customers coming in wanting ONLY SPL rather then both SPL/SQ. I try swaying them towards something that performs awesome in both SPL/SQ but you know people's mindsets. Headphones aren't supossed to have pounding bass period, While some bass is good to much will distract from the SQ unless it's extremely tight hitting and make it hard to hear the full range of sound. I'm sure you've all heard "Ghetto" Car Stereo's with basically just 2 Cheap Subs and horrible Componet speakers!! *Shudders* Also all headphones must be burned in just as any other speaker should be burned in, Over time it gets worn in and has less trouble flexing/moving the material. Of course I'm sure there's more science to it then that.
hmm i see what you guys are aiming at and am understanding it. good points. i think im just swayed away back in highschool when most my friends had thumpin cars w/ rap on.

hehe, i want a pair of these to lissen to the new DVD-audio and SACD discs i just bought for my dad, they sound completely beautiful on my dad's big ass JBL's (YamahaRX-V1300 reciever) oh ya i got Metalica black album(DVD) and Pink Floyd Dark Side of THe Moon(SACD),
anyhow, im confused people are saying the sr-80 are better and the HD-280 are crap and others are saying vise-versa,
which ones will be better for pure hi-fidelity/ gaming but not huge and ugly, right now im just using a pair of sony $25 "street style" headphones so either will be awsome but still..

HD-280= heavy bass, over-ear, great sound isolation, easy to use with portable player
SR-80 = high(er) fidelity, ugly, on-ear
My guess is each will work well with gaming. I've recently been using the HD-280 and plan on soon buying the SR-80 so I'll post back later with a more detailed comparison.
Edit: I should be able to compare these 2 next weekend. Until then...
ya please post back. i would like to know how are the sr80s compared to the 280s
the hd-280's are supposed to have awesome bass, infact some say that they are too bass heavy, what kind of a soundcard are you using? and what programs are you using to test them with?
i use an audigy2 with my hd-600's and they have hella-bass on them, try messing with winamp to see if you can get that bass to go through.
im on my cheap old computer with some crappy soundcard. iunno. my z560s have heavy bass (as in thumpin) while the hd280s provides bass as heavy as my koss portapros that cost half the price.

soundstorm is said to be sounding just as good as audigy 1. however, having an extra sound card is better supposedly because it doesnt stress the CPU i believe. and soundstorm has some problems i hear.

Actually TomsHardware did a test on all soundcards to see which used the least CPU cycles while playing games, the winner was Soundstorm, remember soundstorm is not your typical onboard sound.

the audigy is by far better.
i had an 8RDA+ with the soundstorm and used it for a few days then installed the audigy 1 i have and it was night and day difference.

Ive tried both when building systems and I can back up Tom's. Soundstorm used a few % less than an audigy 2 platinum in the same conditions. And the crackling seemed to be a driver issue. havent experienced it in Fush Zero yet with my personal NF7-s.
...and I dont get an nVidia check.
I have to say though Im real tempted by those SR-80's. My Sony MDR's have been wearing out and Im itching for some new phones. I love music quality and these Grado's look just up my alley.

the sstorm is an audio processing unit, it does all the processing itslef ans doesnt offload it to the cpu as much as other built in sound systems. even the audigy line uses the cpu for more stuff than the sstorm.
my crackles every now and then if it heats up. i need to replace the thermalpad with as5.
I've been breaking in my new Grado SR-80's for the past 33 hours. At first I couldn't stand them because the highest highs were EXTREMELY too strong. But then I found the treble control on my receiver and turned it down to -8. It goes down to -12 and I left the bass at 0. At these settings a few sources sound so good I don't want to stop listening to them. It'll be something to see if these sound even better after breaking them in more. However, I suspect the overly strong highest highs are here to stay.
With most other sources the SR-80's highest highs are still WAY too strong. My HD-280's handle a few of these sources better since they don't amplify them as much. And then there still are other sources such as some TV broadcasts that I can't stand listening to with either of these headphones, yet I have no trouble enjoying them with my home theater center channel speaker that has a Morel tweeter.
Comparative ratings:
HD-280 ... SR-80
Balance ... 6/10 ... 8/10
Clarity ... 7/10 ... 8/10
Vocals ... 6/10 ... 8/10
Highest Highs ... 5/10 ... 1/10
Mid/Mid-Bass ... 9/10 ... 8/10
Bass ... 9/10 ... 8/10 (more than adequate)
Echoes ... 3/10 ... 8/10
Build Quality ... 7/10 ... 8/10
Efficiency ... 9/10 ... 7/10 (these need more power)
Sound Isolation ... 9/10 ... 1/10
Audible Range ... 9/10 ... 8/10
Gaming ... 9/10 ... 8/10
Comfort ... 7/10 ... 6/10
Overall Performance ... 7/10 ... 8/10
I also compared the following headphones which did not come close in terms of overall performance:
- Sony Digital Reference MDR-CD160 / Overall = 2/10
- Koss A/250 / Overall = 3/10
Conclusion:
Although for about $20 more the SR-80's are a cut above the HD-280's, they're both keepers.
