1. There is no difference between the 940 pin Opteron 1xx and the 940 pin Athlon 64 FX. This means that Athlon 64 FX core name is now SledgeHammer.

2. The upcoming AMD Athlon 64 processor was formerly code named “ClawHammer.” There is no difference between “ClawHammer” and the upcoming AMD Athlon 64 processor.

Copy and paste inside quotes.)

OC Detective offers this as proof that Athlon 64 3xxx+ is ClawHammer and that Paris core has not been released yet.

Sandiego is indeed what im waiting for if i get an amd athlon 64 processor system, or i may skip a generation and my athlon xp 2600+ will hold me over for a few years. i dont know when paris comes out but we will see.

My understanding is that the socket 940 will transition to the 939 (with unbuffered memory) next year along with the 754. The reasons for doing this are to effectively segment the server and desktop markets so that AMD can continue to price the Opterons higher - they had to release at 940 in order to hit launch deadlines. If the 754 does indeed go to 939 then expect the 754 socket to be used for the budget offerings such as the Paris.

opterons can run on nforce3 boards with 940 pins so i assume that it is very likely you can run Athlon FX chips in SMP

the chips are exactly the same.. just renamed

Yes we know which chips are the same and which are not. This thread is not about that. It's about something that was talked about for months, namely a code name 'Paris' and whether it was released or not.

The Athlon64 FX requires the use of registered / ECC memory. It's a workstation Opteron 148 chip with a different, catchy name. High-speed ECC modules aren't easy to come by and, more importantly, won't be as cheap as premium non-ECC PC3200+ RAM. That's where the >>> Clawhammer <<< will fit in well; it doesn't need registered DIMMs.

OC Detective, you win!

Athlon 64 FX is SledgeHammer
Athlon 64 3xxx+ is ClawHammer

Paris has not been released yet. Thank you.
