This is just a Tribute.
I've been a member here for over two years now. I've seen the happy times, I've seen the not-so-happy times. But I'm still here.
I remember the good times:)
So what do you remember about the forums?
My contribution to this nostalgia has to have been the Longest Thread in the World (and it's many other names)
a few days of mad originality hit the forum, until it was killed by simple spamming. Hell, even the mods were in on it.
Remember it? Or is there some other poignant ( www.dictionary.com if you need it;))moment you remember?
Remember - This is not the Greatest Thread in the World. This is just a tribute:)

I hate yatta thread.

:D
The fact that I made the second-longest thread in OC history (Song Association), that I carry on the Yatta (http://oni.mgwhite.ca/yatta/) torch, and the Shirt Ninjas (I even had a smilie dedicated to it :sn: ).
The changes I've seen, the people I've indirectly met and talked to. That's what I remember.

May I ask what the longest thread was? What was it about or how many things was it about that made it even longer than the "song association" thread?

I remember Shadow saying that when the 'Song Association' thread was deleted, it took the servers 15 minutes to purge it from the database
I'm sure that the biggest thread was something similar lol
My post memorable moments have to be seeing the shirtninja's formed that was and still is a brilliant ongoing laugh. The only other memorable moment and probably amazing too was seeing Yodums hit over 50 posts a day.

It's been a speedy 2 years, but before I actually posted I spent 6-months reading every single thread in Alternative modding. I'm not sure I can even pick out any highlights because I didn't really join in any of the absurdly long threads.
And Yatta scares me...

The most memorable thing for me was reading BoB's posts in Gripes and moans, along with everyone counting down till when GC was going down, then it took another 2 days.
Been about 2 years here too and I guess what I remember most is how few topics there were when I joined compared to now.
Also at one point I recognized most of the names in the forum, now there are just sooo many people who post in so many topics that I cant keep any names straight.

I cannot say for certain but it might be the "how to overclock a lightbulb" thread. However that one dissappeared right before I found this place and you cannot read the forums in the wayback machine because Skip has spiders locked out.
For me, I remember all the yatta avatars, Some really good debates and specifically the athiesm debate as probably the longest one I participated in. Too bad it is gone.
Edit: It would be remiss of me if I did not mention folding@home. Incase you have not heard about folding@home you can find out more here. (http://folding.octeams.com/)

The good or Song linking thread, Numerous Desktop threads, When [H] was accused of faking/chaning P4 hyperthreading benches... that was fun, The chatlike threads inadvertentlyy trigggerd by a certain member who may not want to be mention... so I won't mention her, you know its bad when you miss replies because your internet connection is too slow. The creation of [OC]FoldingNinjas, who you should all fold for! (I made up the name too, it got voted in:D)
Um.. ya thats all off the top of my head...
Most memorable things I remember are the Yatta thread (I never saw it until it's SECOND incarnation because of my stupid internet connection  ), awesome debates (I especially loved the AI debate), the forming of the shirtninjas, the haiku contest we had (wonder if we should have another one!), and most of all.... The official Lightbulb FAQ.
THAT was a thread

Everything else is just gravy and this is a great community.
I joined right before the 1.6a came out. Since then I've seen the comunity atleast tripple in size.
Best memory of mine was having a 100KB avatar. But Yatta did change my life. Also when Maxvla and OC-Master both had an indirect unofficial hottest avater contest.
Worst moments: The Doom3 fiasco and when the TbredA was released. There was a lot of hate/flaming during those times. Times when the seniors in the community should have been setting a good example, but didn't.

hmm, some of the longest threads I have seen are:
Yatta
Kill button
The spam thread (yeesh, you would've thought the message posting limit would have kicked in)
The P4 HT thread about [H]'s benchmarks - I wasn't there at the time but digging around the forums unearthed a whole can of worms
I think that the longest thread is in the Folding forum however.
The fastest growing thread aside from the spam thread had to be the one about the recent forum changes - it grew to 10 pages in 1 hour hehe.
Of all the threads Yatta is the best. It still plays on my PC and I never get tired of it, not only because it's actually a good song.
This forums = teh win. I found it after finding out I could mess with the BIOS settings of my PC and make it go faster. Hey, I just overclocked. 3 minutes of Google and BAM! I found OC forums and the rest is history. I managed to upgrade my own PC soon after and consequently crank it up :)

I remember coming here, meeting all of you, and learning how to overclock. Then I wrote "The Newbie's Guide to Overclocking" in the AMD CPU's section. The rest is trivial.

I remember no lightbulbs......it was lightbulds......

Welcome to the Lightbuld FAQ.
Lightbuld Voltage Regulators overcome problems by mainataining the buld voltage constant, which keeps the buld at peak efficiency and with reasonable buld life, while the battery voltage varies greatly from the beginning to end of discharge. The result is more total light output, constant brightness light, and often much better battery usage.
Can I run LED's, strobe lights or other electronics off the LVR?
No, the LVR does not put out DC. It puts out Pulse Width Modulation of the battery voltage. It is only suitable for filament light bulds. LED's can be hooked up with a series resistor, but this isn't an efficient way to do this.
LED's can be run on a constant voltage DC source but really they need constant current. There are many DC to DC current mode convertors that can be used for LED's. The problem with white LED's: are far less efficient (when driven hard IE > 50mA) at producing light than a good halogen incandescent light bulb at the lumen levels that most climbers, cavers, and cyclist need. If you only need 1 to 5 lumens LED's are nice, but if you want 40 to 100 lumens they are very expensive way to produce less light and light of poor color temperature with more power consumption than a halogen light buld. However, for low light needs they can work great and if you build large array and keep the per LED current low (< 20mA) you can achieve higher efficiency than light buld.
Strobe lights have a DC to DC convertor in them and so need DC as an input. Many other electronics like radios, tape players etc. also need a DC input.
Can I connect the LVR to more than one buld?
Yes, provided both bulds are the same voltage. However, only the first will dim up.
How hard is it to install a LVR?
The LVR connects between the battery and buld with 3 or 4 connections to the PCB
The new LVR3 software (Rev 4.2) and hardware revision provides:.
Push button selectable power levels (100% 87% 75% 62%)
Extended automatic dim running at end of battery
Reverse protection for all models LVR3
Better startup capability for large buld on small batteries
Allows for larger bulds to be used with the small SMD FET
Improved configuration #1 for switching on and off
Hope this clears some of the common misconceptions about lightbulds up......:D

does anyone remember when the forums was completely different? i mean no black background...and i don't remember any "subsections"...there was just the "forums"----this was back in the spring of 1999....
i had a username then too...but i forgot it and had to re-sign up in 2001 for a question or two about overclocking a p4....then had to resign up again in the early part of this year as a different user..."dusty"
http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=3705
is there any way i can be listed as a member since 1999? or at least 2001?.....i even know my user name from 2001..."dusty" instead of "dustybyrd"
i was a member back when p3 600's came out and "SurlyJoe" saved my butt at like 2AM when i overclocked tooooo far without a voltage increase (p3 600 tA1 stepping) and my computer wouldn't post....
then he told me about holding down the insert key during booting and then i was hooked....although after getting my p3 700 and hitting that sweet 933 spot....well i didn't post for a couple of years...especially since the tualatin was initially made for a different mobo...
i knew so much less then...but my computer rocked and did a great job...plus the first p4 willamettes really s**ked....and why even try to overclock one when a good p3 was just as good on most things and better on some things...
but then one day i just needed a bit more power and i needed a computer "fix"....so i checked out the forums and boy had they grown...mostly for the better....way way more information available now...
got a tualatin and a slot-t for my p3 soyo bx board...and that did the trick for a while...
but then i realized (courtesy of these forums) that i really needed a dual system...and built a dual p3 tualatin and then a couple of dual AMD's...

So what do you remember about the forums?
I remember em too. :)
What do I remember most?
1.) The massive flood of "Boo Ya! I got X stars....lol" threads in GC. And CJwinnit messing it all up by posting something similar to "Booya. I got 3 stars .. lol!!" Gotta have the four dots. :D
2.) The massive flood of posts by Maxvla and Yodums
3.) The quoting of a major part of the member list in the favorite member thread.
4.) The kill switch thread
5.) The yatta thread. Then n17ikh's reaction when I told him it had been closed.
zexmarquies01
05-05-05, 02:36 PM
amazingly, i never got into the yatta thread....oh well
but oooh, the kill Switch thread! now that thread had some good idea's in it!
I remember when skip put the post count on the General Discussion, and the original post count was like 997 posts. I was not happy. i made a big post on my views of it. then skip contacted me...and fixed everything! yay!.
Omg, yodum's join to moderator. wasn't he the fastest regular member to reach moderator status? or at least Sr. Status?
Nerdlogic being a "cougar". heh.
In most of the Girl problem posts, the whole Clorophorm and Van always seems to pop up.
I remember ( and miss ) the old Debate forum. that forum was great. And all those religious Discussions! there were tons of them, and they seemed to go on forever.
Another person i remember probably the most....Nihili! He could always come into a thread, and instantly create peace with all the members. He seemed to always have the right answers too. oh, but i think it kinda sucked when he shaved off his beard!
Seeing skip's name in RED. god, when he just came back not to long ago, and made a few posts...it was freaky seeing his Color as Green!.
I remember when doom 3 was just about to be released, or just as it came out, The mod in there got so frustrated he made ONE Doom 3 thread, and told everyone to post in it...or they are in Deep SH**. heh.
Also, i remembering having ALOT less Mods and Sr's.

LOL... I really dug Oni's pwnage (or should I call him Pwni?) of the Doom3 tread fiasco... and how he subsequently handled HL2's release in the same manner.
I also remember the craziness that ensued when extreme's website was "hostilly overtaken" by a disgruntled admin.
I missed out on Yatta... not sure if it was before my time, but I have heard about it from many. I also missed out on the debates... I really wish I would have been around back in the day... Voodoo Rufus filled me in there... sounds like they were some great times. ;)
