i recently bought a hp xt878 1.3 ghz
When i used cpu id it said that the multiplier was set to 12.5 and the bus was at 103.8... this didn't seem right to me. I'm new to this so a little help would be very welcome.

The bus is often rounded.
Multiplier * FSB = Processor speed
12.5 * 103.8 = 1297.5 MHz
Close enough for me, but a 103 FSB does sound a little odd for a factory computer.

that's what i was thinking.. i assumed that the multiplier would be at 13 and bus at 100

To my understanding the HP xt 878 was equipped with a 1.3 athlon and FSB 100 DDR. See
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph06473.html#P5_142 (http://)
So it should be 13 x 100.

If there is no 13x multiplier on any existing Athlon board or chipset or whatever, how are you going to get it to 13x? If 12.5x is the maximum multiplier, going above 1250 MHz. would require an increase in FSB.. kinda like the screwy 95 and 105 FSB K6-2 models used to be.
Point is, how do you propose that they make use of a nonexistant multiplier?
I checked my BIOS on my MSI K7T Turbo and I can go to 15 on the multiplier...hmmm and no I'm not going to attemt to try to go to 1995 MHz

There are plenty of BIOS/board combinations that have multipliers in excess of 12.5 Iwill and Abit have released BIOSes that support higher multipliers..my Iwill KK266(s) have multiplier support to 15.

So try the 13x setting and see if it actually works..
My guess is that it probably won't, if you haven't tried it already. I have nothing to back this up, but I have a feeling that that might be there for the Palominos coming down the pike. They were supposed to have more L# bridges like everywhere.
Hmmm, I have a K7T Turbo sitting here in a customer's PC.. I wonder if I should play around with it before he picks it up.. :D
Only one comment...watch the temperature, MSI |MB tends to run the cpu warm
