I"ve got an Asus K7V mobo(bios version 1007) w/ 650 slot A classic/ 256 meg PC150 Corsair/ Alpha P7125 cooler and a GFD and I neeed step by step directs to OC this thing.
I have played around with the freq. setting and can only seem to get it up to 103--if I go to 105 it won't boot (any suggestions?) I bumped core V to 1.85.
Oh ya--I got one of those small 6 switch GFD's.

You gotta learn how to change the multipliers on that Gold Finger. Sureley it has instructions on how to increase the multiplier. Try it 0.5x multipl;ier of FSB each time.

Your cooling is ample, what you need to find out is if your chip is a K7 or K75 core. The K7 is a 0.25µ chip, the K75 a 0.18µ chip. The Slot A 650 Athlon comes in both flavours (there are even Thunderbird Slot A 650's available in some climbs). Depending on which one of the bunch that you have you may or may not be able to do very much with the chip.

Consult the CPU database at the main page and see what results other Slotted Athlon 650 guys are getting and what batch coding is on their chips as they achieve this.

Good Luck

It won't do 105 with 1.85V?? Damn, that CPU is stubborn! Have you already removed you cover of your CPU and GFD installed? At this moment I'm at the university, I don't have links available, but if you need some, I can get you them when I'm at home.

If FSB overclocking has reached it's max, only thing left is multiplyer OC'ing. Just increase multiplyer 0.5x at a time and run your pc to see if it's stable. Remember to turn of your PC before switching with your GFD. I always wait 15 seconds after the PC is of, then I change muliplyer, just to be sure. Start with 6.5x, then 7.0, 7.5 etc. Have you already got something to change L2 cache multiplyer? When you are able to post, but not to load into windows, L2 is unstable and you need to lower it.

Let me know how far you are yet, so I can help you any further. Succes!

Remember that this is the KX133 chipset and was very lucky to do anything over 103Mhz on some boards. It used to be widely accepted that the only way to go was Multiplier on AMD and FSB on intel. KT133a and DDR has changed this, and then people get a slot A processor and think they can do the FSB thing - wrong (unless you have an ABit Board)

Get the beta BIOS 1008-001C from http://www.k7v.com

Allows L2 divider adjustments...

Thought I'd leave an update.
I flashed to 1008C bios w/ success- ripped the case off CPU and plugged in the GFD. It wouldn't boot until I increased the core V to 1.85 on GFD and in bios then it booted OK. I changed the cass latency from 2 to 3 and was able to increase my FSB to112. When I tried 115 it wouldn't boot. I shut down and restarted but still wouldn't boot. I had to use the jumpers on the mobo set to default settings to boot and reset to default in bios. I set the jumpers back so I could use soft menu again. I set FSB at 110 and am stable at 715 Mhz. Now I'm going to start increasing the multiplier and see what I can get.
I'll be back to let you know how it goes. I think I'm getting the hang of how this thing works.

Looks like I got this thing topped out. Here's the run down--
8.5 x 105 = 893(I rounded up cause it looks better)
core V @ 1.95
memory bus speed @ 140Mhz. C3
Cache 2/5
CPU Temp 45.5C (I'm gonna add another case fan to see if I can bring that down a little)

It looks like it won't go over 900Mhz. I don't want to go over 1.95 core V right now--I might try later just to see what it will do. I'm just gonna let it run like this for a while to see how it works and start tweaking my graphics card (Asus V6800 Deluxe).
