Can someone explain RAID?

I know RAID is like splitting up data so half goes on each HD, but thats only one type... what is like RAID 1 RAID 0 RAID 5 etc... What is mirroring? Is there raid that i can set up so i get RAID speeds, but if one hd dies, all the info is still on the other? is that was mirroring is?
