I'm planing to upgrade to windows xp for games and only have a dialup. How would I be able to get the lastest patch? Can I order the CD from Microsoft?

Patch for what? The OS? or the games? OS can be purchased in a store, patches must be downloaded from whoever makes the games. and MS generally wouldnt be the best place to purchase software from unless your a partner.

I think he means the service packs. I am pretty sure MS will send you a cd with the pack on it if you provide shipping and handling.

Patch for Windows XP. I heard that you have to regester the OS with Microsoft during installation. what if you don't have internet connection during the install, will it cause an issue?

You dont have to register it during the install. Well you can but its not required. You have somthing like 15 days to activate windows online after the installation.

if you dont have internet the activation wizard will give you a phone # to call based on your location. Its automated, so you call and follow the instructions it gives you (had to that again last night... stupid auto-activate limit)

And NewEgg's got the best price I've seen and ships with Service Pack 1 included, but if you don't have internet, how are you posting?

hahaha very good point, smells a little fishy!
But all windows updates can be downloaded as .exe files from there site (Very useful for Nforce 2 users and it's dodgy USB 2.0 glitch) Just ask a freind if you can use thier system to down load it.
On another note ripped versions of XP that have been patched won't allow you to update via the auto update utility. So if you have one of these copies (Not saying that you have) but if you do ........ Buy the original please it''s better for all involved.
Could be like me. I am posting from work right now. :)
I bought a service pack disc on ebay and it works great. It has all of the critical updates and service packs up till about a month ago. It really saves me a lot of hours with a 28.8 connection trying to patch xp.
