Are there any true sata drives other than the Seagate and do any of the current crop of mobos with on-board sata controllers support true sata functions such as command queing? Thanks.
ummm maxtor wd raptor etc....
AFAIK the WD Raptors are the only true SATA drives along with the Seagate 7200.7+ drives.

Really? Well my mistake then:beer:

Ya, you can 'see' conversion all over the Raptor (prolly why the next will be so much faster), whereas with the Seagate there is no hint of that scourge IDE ;)
Anybody know when the new raptor will be available?

SATA is IDE ;)
IMHO all that really matters is the end performance. Storage Review has some nice benchies for a whole bunch of different applications; that should be a deciding factor, if any.
I think it is funny when people go on about true sata this and that, since sata is just ide. Who cares what specific controller is on either end of the wire as long as it is an sata wire. If the drive and controller combo is new enough to support some of the features scsi has enjoyed for years, even better.
I think you guys are missing the point about True SATA, a lot of the SATA Drives in the market are just PATA Drives with built in converters. We were not talking about SATA being different from IDE. You care what the interface is when your looking for certain features that are not possible with a converter like the rev 2 of the WD Raptors which should be True SATA.
Interestingly, the new Raptors will still use an onboard PATA-to-SATA bridge disdained by many enthusiasts.
from storagereview.com
so the new Raptors will not be pure SATA.
I happened to just check, all of the ibm deskstars for the last few years have supported Tagged Command Queueing, so that particular feature isn't dependent on being "true sata" or not, or even being over an sata interface at all.
