In addition to my dual 2800+ barton, I have just aquired the motherboard reffered to in the title of this post. I have two amd opteron 240's--the best deal, only 250 apiece--intend to overclock. Anyway, I have two 512mb sticks of corsair LL memory, which I know is high performance, but is not ecc. I have head with other dual operton motherboards that the first two slots in the motherboard will accept no-ecc memory. If this is true, than I can save a bunch a money. Can anyone help me with this? I will post pics in about a week, when it is all up and running and when everything arrives. Thanks--dual opteron--it will be great when windows-64 comes out!!

Out of curiosity(I'm interested in acquiring a dual opteron). What hardware do you run on your Barton SMP rig, and what hardware will you run on your dual opteron?

From what I have read (having no personal experience with Opterons,) dual Opteron boards REQUIRE Registered ECC PC2700 or (some) Registered ECC PC3200.

From the data that has been presented thus far, unbuffered RAM, like yours will NOT work.

That said, however, I would definitely give it a shot, if I were you. I am VERY curious if they really will support unbuffered, like the MPX chipset does.

If you find out, please post it here.

By the way, WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!

I read an article not too long ago (i think it was on anandtech) that said opterons only supported ECC memory, because the memory controller is on-chip. The athlon 64 fx also supports ECC only, because it shares the same memory controller as the opteron.

DaBigJ has it right. I've heard that there's some good Mushkin Reg PC3200 at Newegg, you might want to look at that.

I read somewhere the memory controler was ripped from the 76* northbridges. The only thing that needs to be adjusted is the memery timings and traces on the board have to be layed out in a different way. There is a article on The Inquirer about this. (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11893)
