My Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb is running like pure crap on games. I run worse with it on Morrowind than I did with my Ti 4200, and most of the text in my games are screwed up now.
I used the NVCleaner to completely get rid of the detonator drivers, etc.

My pc is:

Athlon 2000+ 1.67 ghz
512 mb Pc 2100 ram
K7T266 Pro 2 A motherboard (4x agp)
I know this will bottlekneck the card a little bit, but it boggles my mind that a card that was only good a year ago runs games better than one of the best cards on the market.
Please help me!

First 2 Qs I gotta ask are:

1. What drivers are you using, and have u tried installing newer ones
2. Did you connect the extra power plug on the card itself?

1) 3.7, I tried using the drivers that came on the cd (3.4) and they didn't improve anything so I re-installed the 3.7's
2) yes.

These cards run pretty hot, so if ur system isn't cool enough it could be it.
I'm not too sure tho, I never had either one of the cards so I guess I can't help you here, would it be too hard to reinstall the OS?

I was thinking about installing XP on another hdd and seeing if that works.

So far I am very dissapointed in ATi and my 9800 :(

I know you checked already but look at the power supply on your vid card again. is it EXACTLY as shown on the owners manual? I know it seems frivilose but having it set up just like it shows makes a HUGE difference. These cards are way finnicky. You might want to get a driver cleaner(software) to really clean out all of your ati drivers and then reload those drivers . You might also want to try some omega drivers (4.74a) they work pretty smooth in my experience. Bottom line is don't give up on ati they are awsome cards. Once you get it set up right you will not be disappointed..............tr

I looked up on ATi's site and did it EXACTLY how it showed, Power Supply > Graphics Card > Hard drive. I have nothing else on that power cord, put the rest that is on the same one as my CD-RW.

I was wondering if I could re-install windows if that might have a difference, or if I would have to reformat altogether.

And the bad game text is really ****ing me off. It's like it's trying to anti-aliase the game text so it's all fuzzy, or just nearly a big blcok.
Anyone else have suggestions?

It is either a driver problem, or you need to re-install Window's.

I would try Driver Cleaner first, then re-do Win installation.

The card might be busted too.

Thank god I spent the extra 20 dollars on the 3 year old warranty.

thanks Maxi, do you have a link for Driver Cleaner?

why dont you try running 3dmark2001se (build #330) and tell us what score you get. To be totally honest, on a system of that speck i wouldnt expect the 9800pro to perform much better at all without the use of FSAA and/or AF.

When i had an ECS K7S5A+xp1800, my softmodded r9500 (9700) performed no better than a friends ti4200. infact when that ti4200 was overclocked it outperformed my card without FSAA on. Now i know my card is a far cry from a 9800pro, but that does go some whay to explaining why your performance could be so bad.

I did driver cleaner and cab cleaner, re-installed my agp drivers and the cat drivers and still the same. So if I re-install windows and it still doesn't change it's either my card is messed up or my crappy computer is slowing it down?

you knowI have had problems with my r9700pro as of late much to my chagrin it would artifact at the drop of a hat.I tried everything, different drivers, different settings . just about everything I can think of. Finally I said enough of this , I am gonna pull the card !! Well I get down in there and man is it dusty! so I get to thinking, and I take the whole pc apart and blow it out clean all the dust off ,all the nooks and crannies......Well it's all back together now and guess what?! no artifacting...........so far

Now I know this might not be the answer your looking for ,I know you want resolution but if you check all your settings and all your drivers are loaded and working proper and your settings are set to default and your not overclocking the card nor your pc and you haven't messed with the ati's bios, and it wont work at any lower setting ,then I would say you have a bum card and need to replace it. I'm sorry if I were not of much help, so what with your extended warrenty ,replacement should not be a problem ............tr

heheh thanks trulyred. I know it's not dust because I just put the card in a few days ago and use air in a can on my computer frequently. I guess i'll ask for a new one.

Hey kazr, how are you concluding that the card is performing crappy?

Run a 3DMARK03 bench if you can and post the published score up. You will need DX9 installed.

I am very familiar with result's and can maybe find what's wrong.

I'm still thinking Window's reinstall, esp. after you verified the driver's and mentioned text problem's in your first post.

And try it in another machine if you can.

Or hell, just warranty it:p

Yes, if you have cable. Otherwise the DL will take 8 hours;)

Post the link to the 01 score in the meantime

4 minutes away from 03, and how do I get a website of my score? I'm not too into 3dmark and don't have a serial for it right now.

El<(')>Maxi

You don't need a serial number. It's a free program that can be registered to obtain full function. Make sure to get the program patch to build 330 if it's not included in the install.

All you have to do is submit the score for online results. You will need to register a user name then you can access the Orb(online result's browser).

Then need to publish the score(small check box), which will list a URL to your score on the detail's, or project manager page.

Copy that link and then come back and post it.

10,552 defult settings xp1800 on a k7s5a.with a 9700np. with a bit of driver tweaking i would expect you to get 12.5k at the most running defult settings,

As i said before you dont exactly have the best components to partner that 9800pro with. Will you listen this time?

like james has said, having the best card out doesnt mean youll get ultimate performance, your FSB is a very limiting factor when it comes to games, and having it stuck at 133 is quite a bottleneck.
That score james posted at 133fsb also shows that youll get a pretty low score, and if hes got one with the card at the same settings and a higher fsb, youll begin to se a big difference.

And just for comparison, ive got a radeon 8500 le thats not too far off your cards score, but im running a fsb of 187.

If you do want better performance then your gonna need to upgrade your cpu, which means upgrading your motherboard, and your memory im afriad.

Stil, there are plenty of tweaks to do to get your performance up, like tweaking bios agp settings etc. I would also recomend, like the others that you do a full re-install of windows XP.

11,320 same settings (133x11.5 - stock xp1800) but on my nf7-s v2. Not exactly the high fsb score you wanted lol, but it goes to show how important the motherboard is.

Here is a perfect example:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7039253

nforce2 motherboard
stock xp2000 (1.67ghz)
stock r9800pro
stock fsb - 133mhz

score: 13,249

i beileve there is nothing wrong with your score, kazr

looking at the other scores for 1650mhz-1700mhz cpu speed, thay are all around yours.
