Ulinke Splinter Cell, this one will probably appear on all formats simultaneously, but that simply serves to show off the vast technical differences between the systems. The Xbox iteration, as always, will be the best looking, quickest loading, and the only one to feature Dolby 5.1 digital surround sound.
But those are the things you expect. Ubi Soft has gone right ahead and done something radical, unexpected, and unlikely. Ubi Soft has turned Splinter Cell into a multiplayer experience, complete with online functionality, downloadable content, and the astounding benefits of the Xbox Communicator, which is one more reason we can forgive the lack of exclusivity. GameCube and PS2 will not be getting these particular goodies.

Multiplayer At Midnight

The single biggest change to the Splinter Cell legend is the inclusion of multiplayer. No small feat, given that the game is entirely based around the antics of a lone operative in an environment where action is usually superceded by stealth.
The multiplayer modes also happen to be the game's biggest mystery, as Domitille Doat, producer of Splinter Cell and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow explains. "Because this will be hte first multiplayer game in the "stealth action" genre, we want it to provide the best possible multiplayer experience. We are currently experimenting with a number of different modes, but it's too early for us to say which ones will - and which ones won't - meet the high standards of the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell team."
She's right, of course. Splinter Cell will have the unenviable position of having to define the standards and concepts for an entierely new genre, multiplayer stealth. And that could even include cooperative sneakery.
Doat confirms that co-op gameplay will "very likely" be included. As co-op games increase in number and quality, its becoming apparent to gamers that helping friends online is almost as fun as destroying them. Xbox Live and its ubiquitous Communicator make this a much more pleasant experience.
The Xbox Communicator opens up a whole new dimension to the experience, something players of Ghost Recon via Xbox Live will be more than familiar with. Strategic communication will definitely be possible between cooperating players, although it has not been decided how that feature will play out with opposing players. We think it would be very nice to whisper "behind you" just before you break and unsuspecting buddy's neck. In the game, of course.
The game's puzzle- and mission-based dynamic will definitely make the transition to multiplayer, and Doat reveals even more when pressed for details, only saying, "We definitely want to maximize the online experience. Timed action, or actions that players can do in cooperation with one another, is something we are considering as a means of reaching our goal."

See, if only you had read the Offical Xbox magazine you would have known this information and more, over 4 months ago ;)

yeah, you forgot about the PC version.

yea, x-box will be the best looking CONSOLE version of the game.....no doubt the PC version will blow all the consoles out of the water when comes to graphics (providing you have a decent vid card).

Anyway, this multiplayer intrigues me. I can imagine it will be what counter-strike SHOULD be. One team defends a position, and the other team tries to sneak in to complete some sort of objective. But I worry that it will be what Counter-Strike IS, which is two teams go in running and blast each other. It will take a LOT of work in order to make sneaking worthwhile.

But then of course you have to worry about human players. Gamma/brightness will make it MUCH harder to hide from enemies....while the AI can't see you in the shadows, a human player most likely can.

Doesn't matter, I'm still looking forward to it, lol. Will be a definate challenge for game designers to implement the MP part (especially with 3rd person?), but if they can pull it off it will create a whole new genre of online gameplay.

I think multiplayer will be based around stealth and trickery.

For example in the trailer, one Sam Fisher is trying to sneak up on another Sam Fisher from behind. Then all the sudden the fisher that was sneaking was sniped in the neck by the guys team mate.

So I think it will be a huge game based on darkness and stealth. In many ways the same way doom 3 is going to be; only with out the giant guns.

I think that there's going to be a lot of problems w/ the MP aspect, especially co-op, and working w/ people you don't know.

When I'm playing co-op w/ my friends in something, if one of us says 'Hold' or 'Stop' or 'Rush' that's pretty much what happens. However, because of the nature of Splinter Cell, it's usually good to not rush into a situation. But when you're working w/ people you don't know, there will always be that one guy who'll have to rush in and try to be Rambo or something, and end up getting either himself or everybody killed in the process, then it's a round of real-time insults about your mom via the voice option, and on to the next round.

my fears exactly. As I said, they're going to have to work REAL hard in order to discourage that sort of behavior.

The problem I see is that even if people play correctly, after a few weeks everyone will know all the hiding spots.....then it's up to the mapmakers to make sure that doesn't happen.

oh im sorry, are you talking abotu the most powerful console on the market? and if you havent bought one then how do you know if its silly or not?

XboX version would be more better

Power does not always equal good. The raw processor power or graphics rendering capability means nothing on console. Absolutely nothing.

It's the GAMES that make or break a console, and the Xbox has nothing that blows my shirtninja hood back. Why should I buy a computer that sits under my TV? I already have a computer, and it's much better than the Xbox, tyvm.

You're right, I haven't bought one. I don't plan on buying one, either. Not 'cause I hate Microsoft or anything trivial like that, it's 'cause there are no games on it that impress me. Nothing on the Xbox has jumped out at me and screamed "I AM THE BEST GAME YOU WILL EVER PLAY!", like on other consoles, or the PC platform. That's how I know it's silly. Why buy something I'll never use? Isn't that silly?

Back on topic: I would like to know how they're going to discourage people from being Rambo or whatever in this game. Maybe a heirarchial militaristic system, like w/ Seargents and Privates and whatnot. That might be hell to implement, but it would keep people from TKing and rushing and not following commands and whatnot.

Hopefully people that played the first splinter cell will remember what happens when you do play rambo.
My best bet, would be that when you run/walk the guns become very inacurate. This would make it very hard to kill anything, since the guns are already very weak.

They will probably intruduce multiple play modes, such as no guns and that the only way to win would be to sneak up behind someone.

I have great faith in UBI soft, I do not think they will fail us.

just because you dont like the xbox doesnt mean you should call people silly for buying it, and wether you want to admit it or not, better graphics make games funner, goldeneye for n64 used to be fun as hell, but if u play it now it makes you want to go play quake 3

That is simpily not true, because MGS is still the funnest game i have ever played, and my copy of Asherons Call 2 is sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

Idk about that. I spent (and still do spend) many an hour playing games on my SNES. I find many of the games on older systems quite a bit more challenging and fun than most things now, y'know why? 'cause back in the day, they didn't have pretty graphics or computers 10,000,000 times more powerful than the ones used to put people on the moon. They had to rely on gameplay.

Graphics don't make a game. If graphics made games, there would be so many #1 hits out there it wouldn't be funny.

Would you buy a game just 'cause it was pretty? Of course not. Pretty doesn't equal fun. Pretty graphics enhance the fun, but if the game isn't any fun to begin with, graphics aren't going to help it much, are they?

If you would like to continue this conversation, please do it through PMs. I'm getting kinda tired of crapping on Cowboy X's thread arguing about which system has prettier graphics

Back on topic: The guns in SC aren't exactly weak. Sure, it takes about 3 rifle rounds to the chest to kill a guard. But it's not the strength of the weapons, it's how you use them. I mean, you could put three in the chest, or put one in the head ;)

I would like to see a 'weaponless' adeptation or something. THAT would be cool!

Of course. But they are "weak" if your a player trying to be Rambo. I just don't see anyone being stupid enough to go balls out and thinking they can survive.

Anyways, has anyone seen a release date yet?

Well, the guns are weak. A silenced pistol tends to be weak compared to a guard with a rifle.

Hm, brilliant. That's how you balance gameplay. Something like an infiltration MP mode....one team has high-powered rifles (defense), the other team is a bunch of sam fishers with the pistol (and no stealing guns from the other team). The only possible way to get into the base is to sneak in....if you make noise, then you'll be spotted and you'll die fairly fast. The only way to take out a guard is to pop them in the head when they're not paying attention. Or, just sneak past them.

But then that brings on the problem of camping......if everyone can just guard the objective, then offense will never get in. that could be countered with more than one objective point...like retreiving a data stick from 1 of 3 computers.

Anyhow, as I said, this is very much a design issue. But, I'm certain that they will come up with something. They wouldn't defile the splinter cell name with poor multiplay...i'm sure they'd just as soon leave it out.

There are other methods and tools to be used, too. Sticky/diversion cameras are very, very useful for scouting and taking out guards (try hitting a guard in the head w/ a sticky camera one day, or gassing them w/ the diversion camera ;)). There's also smoke grenades, which are great fun to bounce around. They could be used to flush out campers. Ring Airfoil Rounds/Sticky Shockers are also very good at neutralizing threats from a relative safe distance w/o raising suspisions. Flares are good for distractions.

Splinter Cell 2: Already released for nokia java enabled mobile phones. Not bad either, considering the limitations of the hardware its running on
