is 256 really worth the extra money for the 9800 pro? and am trying to choose between the 9800pro or the FX 5900 Ultra, please help me decide, thanks.

9800 pro is the choice for video cards
256mb is controversal - currently it barely helps - but in the future
starting with doom3 it willl help a lot. so if you wanna play that
game at its best - the 9800 pro 256mb is yer bet

i had the 9800pro 256 and sent it back. took a 45 dollar hit for that. i'm an on line gamer and the ati9800 would not let me adjust the setting (gamma or color) while gaming. many, i mean many e-mails to ati and no help. started calling (canada) and they were no help told me maybe a patch might come out! lol. i've had
many g-force cards ti-500- gforceti4800se and now the fx5900(256) and never a problem. can make any adjustments anytime u want. go asus or gainward.

i would go for the radeon 9800 Pro 128 mb version, the only difference you are going to see with current games is if u are running 1600x1200 with AA/FSAA and the difference isnt all that much...save the money

lol. you took a 45dollar hit for that? what some people will do for gaming lol...... anyway i guess you havnt heard asus is going ati?
I remeber when I bought the 64mb ti4200. Now almost two years later, I wish I had the 128. So if you have the money, get the bigger version, that way two- three years down the road when some unknown game comes out your left with that little extra edge.
But right now 256mb shows no improvement, and this includes the DOOM3 engine. http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030512/geforce_fx_5900-12.html Look at the difference between the 128 and 256 version of the 9800. There is no difference.

after going to that link, it seems the FX beats the 9800 pro in those games, but in HL2 the 9800 pro beats the FX, so the question is, should i get the pro for hl or get the fx for all the other games? BTW, prolly will get the 256, thanks
Well, I would not take those numbers too sersioulsy regarding FX vs. 9800 pro. The benchmark itself was released by id and Nvidia, so its possible there could be a bit of bias in the benchmark or optimizations in Nvidia's drivers.
Assuming I am wrong regarding the benchmark being lopsided, I would still go ATI. Lately their track record has been a bit more trustworthy, and the 9800 performs better in a majority of games once AA is turned on.

i would go with 128MB regardless of which card you decide to get. by the time a game actually benifits from 256MB of ram the rest of the videocard won't be up to the task in my opinion.

I like the guy who took a 45 dollar hit for a 5900 ultra. He took alot bigger hit than that. :) What a major moron. He said it, not me.

if you have the mone, go 256, who says a game designed ot use that 256 comes around in say...8 months or so...would you rather have the card or have ot replace your's for a new 256 card?

256 only helps on very high resolutions, and even then not by much
not even DOOM III benefits from 256mb ram, and since that engine is POWERFULL as hell! id say go for 128, IF a game comes along that needs 256mb, it is very likely that the 9800pro will also be outdated :)

At the time when the 64meg and 128 Ti4200 were released the 128meg was a lot faster in some games, (I had both cards) but I hear what you are saying.
I don't think there are any games that demonstrate a big enough jump in performance to justify the extra outlay. I doubt there will be any in the lifetime of the card that will make that much difference but time will tell.
seems no matter what the ati will outdo the fx5900, but i would jujst go with the 128,, sometimes the way the memory is done it may actually ruun slower..
