Just got the system goin last week-

P4 2.4c @ 3.01
MSI 865pe NEO2
512mb Kingston HyperX PC3500 2x256
Radeon 9800 pro

Anyways, finally got around to fartin with the timing's. Right now it's 2,2,2,8. Forgive my ignorance on the subject, but I have two questions. 1) Is this good/bad and why? 2) What program to use to benchmark memory? What results do I look for? I've been out of the loop as far as overclocking and things for the past 4 years or so...first time with a mobo where I could set ram timings.
:p

I know very little and probably less, but I've been doing some research on the same thing, though, only for AMD based systems so this may not translate to yours exactly. You'll have to find out.

It seems the last number in that set (CAS) is the bread winner. Also having a stable system with it at 2 is very nice. And avoid 3 apparently.

Your first number (the 8) seems not to fit from my lastest info given by...what's his name.. uh.. something.miller (sorry x.miller :) )
The 2 middle numbers are added and then add 2 to that. So..
8-3-4-2 for simplicities sake should actually be 3+4=7 and add 2 to that... =9.
Yours I guess should be 6. I don't think the final 2 that you add has anything to do with the CAS.

I'm sure this is vague, but it's the best I can do. If you're anything like me, I'd prefer any reply rather than none :).

Hope it helps some.

Look in the thread right below this one for a better explination

Hi KidJethro

Your questions
1) Your timings are ok. If the "2-2-2" works for you then you might want to try changing the "8" to a "6". Go to the following site to find out more about memory and timings:
http://www.rojakpot.com/
2) You should test your RAM with Memtest86 which you can get for free from this site: http://www.memtest86.com/
For benchmarking, the memory bandwidth benchmark in SiSoftware Sandra is popular right now. http://www.sisoftware.net/sandra

Cheers

Approciate the replies guys. :)

Merc- next reboot I'll try the "6" setting. And thanks ALOT for the links.

LxOxSxI- THanks for the info, and you are correct, any reply is better than none.

;)

Well, after checking BIOS, I was mistaken about the 2,2,2,8 setting. It's 2,2,2,5. The 8 is burst length. I must be dislexic. lol...

Anyways, I ran MemTest- No errors there. How long are ya supposed to let this program run?

As for SiSoft Sandra, downloading as we speak. (Dial up). Will report back with results soon as its finished.
