I've included a link to MSConfig.exe, which you can copy to the C:\WINNT\System32 directory...in order to run the executable from the Run box.

...just click on the Windows 2000 link (the file is taken from XP). :)

thanx.

Why did they stop by 2k but start using it again by xp?

I have pondered the same question myself. I would have thought that MS was trying to keep 2K as bloat free and secure as possible in order to attract large scale corporations to use 2000.

MSCONFIG messes up your computer?
or does it make it not as secure?

I should note that you can also view the list of your startup programs by looking in the...

C:\Winnt\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up directory, and in the Registry, primarily under...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Run and...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER | SOFTWARE | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Run

These can also be viewed by right-clicking My Computer-->"Manage" and expanding System Tools | System Information | Software Environment | Startup Programs. To prevent any of them from starting at login, you'll have to delete shortcuts from the startup folder(s) and/or edit the Registry.

MSConfig was a utility added to Win98/Me to allow people with little or no knowledge of computers a graphical means of temporarily controlling some of their PC's startup functions. It was primarily intended as an aid to troubleshooting, to be used by the user only while being talked through the process by telephone tech support personnel. :)
