View Full Version : Raffle! SCEPTRE LCD Monitor!
Shadow рс

So far this is working out well. I really wanted to do a 19" monitor, but anything of any quality is close to $600. I'd either have to raise ticket prices or sell more tickets. I just don't think it would sell as well.
If this raffle ends early, I'll start another (probably super speed drives with adapter card) immediately after.......as several of the members have suggested.
Good luck to you all, and THANK YOU for your support!

You have to sign up for it and it takes 3 days(i think) to get verified.

you do not need to be verified to send money.
There IS another alternative however........if you live near a Bank of America you can make a direct deposit. Paypal also won't get a chunk of the cash that way =)

umm no. People hate spam.....and overclockers.com doesn't care for it too much either. If you DO want to receive an email when these raffles take place, send an email (maxvla@maxvla.com) to Maxvla and he'll add you to the list.
if you like, shadow, i can take over the email duties.

email sent to shadow for tossing me on the list if you need it to max just toss me a PM and I will kindly send you my address as well.
PS it's only spam when you don't want it ;)
Paypal takes a bite out of it before it gets to the recipient Conqueror. I've lost about 15$ on a 400$ payment, 10$ on a 200$ payment. Comepletely unrelated to this, naturally... but paypal screws everyone equally.

paypal takes the bite out of the person who RECEIVES the money
if you send $25, the person will not get a full $25
i'm still debating whether to enter this one
macklin01
09-29-03, 01:26 PM
That depends on the type of paypal account. If you have the very basic paypal account that doesn't accept credit card payments, there are no fees on either end. (See the fees (http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside) page. I'm talking about the personal account type.)

Might want to edit the disclaimer on that page and proof read the rest of the page for accuracy, incase this is any indicator:
DISCLAIMER: You're going to have to use install the card at your own risk, we are not responsible for any damage done by the installation. For example, If after installing the card, you sit back in your easy chair to burn a CD, and you slide backwards slightly, bumping the table behind you, which knocks a radio into the pool right outside your computer room, killing the people in the pool, causing a massive short, which blacks out the entire city, but not after causing the power plant supplying your area with power, which just happens to be on a well known fault line, to explode, causing a massive earthquake, which sends California into the ocean.... IT'S NOT MY FAULT!!!
In the event the cost of the card has not been covered by tickets sold, the raffle will be extended until sufficient tickets have been sold.
Perhaps you should replace "card" with "prize", or make some other similar change.
Just paypal'ed for 1 ticket/$10 dollars. Put me on the list.

i got my one
People don't seem to be buying up these raffle tickets very quickly. It's been like a week and only 1/3 of the tickets have been sold.
Come on people! Even if you don't need an LCD, it's an excuse to send a little money Skips way for keeping these wonderful forums running. I've already got a great 19" CRT and have no need for another monitor and I bought 3 tickets!
If you haven't donated lately, this is your chance.
Cowboy Shane
10-03-03, 04:58 PM
I did my part by buying a ticket, but have you seen this thread yet? (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=235816)
Now THATs an interesting thread...but Skip is still hosting us at the moment, so let's throw a little more cash his way.
Tismedt
10-03-03, 11:01 PM
OK so Skip sold the forums. I still think a raffle is a good way to pay back the members here that have dedicated soooooo much time to these forums. Like mentioned in the thread you linked to we can still have raffles and with better prizes or more of them. If the raffle takes in say 850 bucks we could easily have a 17" lcd and a 9700 and a stick of memory as an example. I like raffles and would still like to see them even though we no longer need the bandwidth funds. Speak up guys what do you think.
filip04
10-04-03, 12:01 AM
we could even have raffles that wouldn't MAKE any money at all... all of the money would go towards the winning piece of hardware be it a vid card, lcd, cpu+mobo combo, or whatever
Tismedt
10-04-03, 02:03 PM
Yep we could do $5.00 spot and have a prize value upto 500 bucks. Or stay with 10 bucks and give out 3 prizes 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes. $500, $300 and $200 values as an example of course.
You got any info for us Shadow? Are we going to continue the raffle or refund the money already sent in for this one? I hope it continues.
I.M.O.G.
10-05-03, 05:20 AM
There is no reason I see that this raffle would be canceled. Although the previous raffles have helped to catch up on late hosting fees, Skip has still put a lot of his own money into these forums over the months - so there is still a very good reason to donate and participate in the raffle.
Due to Skip no longer having ownership of the forums, I don't believe there would be enough membership interested in donating to/participating in the raffle. I think people were largely contributing out of the goodness of their hearts trying to help Skip, and the raffle was just a good motivator to get people to go through the motions of making the donation.
Basically, I don't think raffles would do well if held continuously.
BTW: I still have not been listed on the raffle page, but I am in communication with Shadow through PM... I think they lost my donation in the couch cushions. ;)

Lucky Dog. Have you recieved the 9800 yet?
IMOG I agree with you somewhat but I do think raffles would still sell out here. I mean a chance at a kickass prize for 10 bucks is always going to lure ppl in. You make a very good point about the money Skip has spent on this forum over the yrs and I agree we should keep donations going to him until we can at least cover the costs of the rig he sold to keep things going here. Or maybe get him a lifetime supply of Jack :D Parties at Skips house.

I don't see a reason we should stop the raffles either. Maybe well sell enough tickets to cover the cost of the hardware, paypal fees and my new BMW.........but bandwidth won't be an issue anymore. :D
I'm not sure if lowering ticket prices or just selling less tickets would be better tho. $350 vid card would be 35 tickets or a 1 in 35 chance to win per ticket.........lowering it to say $5 would make it 1 in 70. I guess you could buy more tickets.......but just seems easier to leave the prices alone.
Thoughts?

I.M.O.G.
10-08-03, 10:02 PM
What is your cost for the monitor? How many tickets does it take to cover the cost?
Since one of the conditions for end of auction is covering the cost of the prize, I think this is information that could be shared. I assume it is somewhere in the range of $400-500.
And this raffle can't really die, we must be fairly close to the total needed tickets already... And the odds of winning are looking fairly good right now, so more people should buy yet.
Tismedt
10-08-03, 10:19 PM
Well heres an Idea.
Take the prize $ amount, (include shipping) divide by 50 and sell spots at that price. I would set a limit at 3 spots but hey thats just me.
As for this one I think ppl are not as keen on buying tickets on a raffle that makes 2x the amount of the prize. Can we do the raffle when the cost is covered? We are into the third week and sales have pretty much died.
Shadow рс
10-10-03, 04:32 PM
the raffles were geared to clear about $400 each time......and as an fyi, this raffle is quiet a bit short of "clearing the mark". If this one does not sell enough to pay the cost of the monitor, refunds will be necessary. This is not good as paypal takes a fee for accepting the payment, then charges another fee to refund it. That comes out of my pocket.
I play Dark Ages of Camelot with a few hundred people in an Alliance. Any objections to offering them a shot at the raffle? While I'm not sure any of them would be interested, we could at least try and cover clost.
IF there ends up being any profit from this one, Skip is still out SEVERAL thousands of dollars from the past, and is still paying bandwidth till the forums are moved to their new location.......he'll get the proceeds.
I like the idea of 50/cost and will probably do that on the next one.

Looks like it's getting close. I see 49 entries.
If everybody did the 3/$25 deal, that would be floor(49/3) * $25 = $400.

Skip has been paying for these forums for a LONG time .
1 HD last time I was at skips was 150 bux and we had like 8-9 hds , they only lasted at most 6 months , you do the math.
So , I think this is the LEAST we can do for countless hours of enjoyment , let alone knowledge gained from this site .
come on people , we need to help out the man who has helped us out in more ways than one .
I bought 6 tickets , and am thinking of buying more , to give back to the man . I couldnt imagine going to anot[H]er forum for anything . You have been given the privilage of many users knowledge for free , all that is asked of you is treat people kindly , or as you want to be treated .
many freindships have formed here , some I even call Brother/Sister , so in a way you are helping out Family , would you deny your brother/sister 10 bux , if you had it ? I know I wouldnt .
also , I just want my monitor :) :D

I'm thimking about buying another 3 spots also. But I'll have to sleep on that.

10-21-03, 10:13 PM
Hmm, by my calculations,
we have at most 17 groups of 3 tickets and 2 separate tickets, for a minimum of $25 x 17 + $10 x 2 = $445 gross.
The monitor is $359 at NewEgg + $15 shipping, so $445 - $359 - $15 is a minimum $71 clearence. Of course, there's the second shipping cost, but on the other hand, there were fewer than 17 groups of 3 tickets. So, this thing is starting to look good!
Looking forward to my monitor, since my 7-year-old CRT is starting to die. :) -- Paul

This raffle will last until 100 tickets are sold, or until October 30th, 2003. In the event the cost of the prize has not been covered by tickets sold, the raffle will be extended until sufficient tickets have been sold.
According to the site, we are one day beyond the deadline. Do we have a winner yet? Any idea on how long the raffle may be extended? How many more tickets need to be sold to cover the cost, and will the drawing be held once the cost is covered?
I know this raffle got kind of lost in the transition to the new ownership, but it would be nice to hear some official response as to the status of the raffle.
I would like to add that if it is decided that the raffle needs to be canceled, then I do not want my contribution back. I bought a ticket to help these forums, and that stands even if there isn't a chance of winning a monitor.

Wed seems to be a good day for holding a raffle. To give everyone the opportunity to be there, how about Wed at 10pm Eastern time.
No need to purchase any more tickets.......unless you want a shot at winning. I already purchased the monitor (locally) and cost was covered by money collected.
There will not be another raffle for some time. I have some personal matters to attend to, but after they are cleared up, we can do another one for cost. Maybe a motherboard/cup/memory combo. Whatever cost for the hardware is, plus shipping, will determine the number of tickets sold. If the total comes to $400, we'll sell $40 tickets at $10 each or some such nonsense.
I'll come up with a few items and post a poll.
Sorry for the delay.

Sorry for the delay.
No problem at all. We all should be aware that life sometimes intrudes into our little online communities, and I hope things work out for you.

Wed works for me also. Glad to see you here Shadow and I hope all is well with you and yours.
If we add a cup holder to the next raffle can it be one that swiveles (sp) and holds the cup level, cuz I live in Cal and during the earthquakes I dont want to spill my firewater and burn down the house.
Hey, I just realised the drawing is going to be held on my birthday!
I hope the random number generator likes giving out birthday presents!
Ooh, Shadow, wanna give me a bunch of free ticket slots for my birthday? Come on...you know you want to.

It doesn't matter how many slots you have - there is only one winner and I already own the winning slot.

Sorry, your good luck dance is no match for my bad luck on a good day.
Posted 13 mins before my birthday (and raffle day) (http://forum.oc-forums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=243913)
I'm doing a surface scan of my hdd right now to make sure that isn't the problem, but something tells me the birthday boy is trading his old epox motherboard for a new lcd monitor.

Ever wonder what a DDoS Attack is like...
On behalf of the routing committee I would like to pass along the following to our loyal users.
ZiRC is currently under a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack.
This means it is hard or impossible to connect to us at the moment.
Currently the best way of connecting to ZiRC is to use the server deliverance.zirc.org, ports through 6660-6669. Port 6667 is not working, so please remember to set a specific port on connect. You can do this by typing the following in mIRC: /server deliverance.zirc.org 6660 *Where 6660 is specify the port you want to try. (SSL on port 7001 is working as normal.)
Hopefully the network will be fully restored as soon as is possible, basically when the attack is over.

I would reccommend that people try to get on zirc like a half hour before the actual auction just to make sure that you can. I am working on another solution if we cannot get enough people on zirc.
Stay tuned for details...

i installed MIRC, got to step 2 in your instructions, selected ZIRC: random server, clicked ok, but then nothing happens. Just gives me a window titled "zirc, not connected"
Anyone got some instructions on how to get IRC up and running in trillian? I just installed trillian yesterday because I needed to communicate with someone in my class via MSN. So now that I've got it, I don't want to have to get mIRC up and running as well.

As luck would have it, zirc is in the middle of a ddos attack. They have only one server up (so at least we cannot get an inconvienient netsplit :) ) but it can take a while to get on even if you use a command line.
I did check Dalnet and it appears to be running fine, so we can do the raffle there if need be. I am online in both networks so just say my name when you get in and I will get the audible alert.
See you in a little while...
It DID take me 45 mins to get in......

If you send an email to malpinewalis@hotmail.com I can send you the whole log file for complete verification. However, the most important bit is this:
[10:06pm] <@Malpine> SpeeDj, what do you think about doing the raffle with only one judge?
[10:07pm] <@SpeeDj> I am not sure Malpine :\
[10:08pm] Malpine sets mode: +m
[10:13pm] <@Malpine> My feeling is that everyone who wants to be here probably is. The random number generator works fine and I can email Shadow the log of the channel. So lets get on with business.
[10:14pm] <@SpeeDj> Aye I agree
[10:14pm] <@Malpine> Gokes, sorry about the mix-up. Shadow will refund your money.
[10:16pm] <@Malpine> Now the number of unsold tickets means that there is a one in three chance that I will pull an unsold number. Should that happen, I will pull another.
[10:16pm] <@Malpine> If need be, I will pull numbers until we have a winner.
[10:17pm] <@Malpine> Drum roll...
[10:17pm] <@Malpine> 11
[10:18pm] <@Malpine> Ryan Richard is the winner!!!
[10:18pm] Malpine sets mode: -m
[10:18pm] <RyanRichard> :o
[10:18pm] <Tismedt> congrats Ryan
[10:18pm] <JDXNC> Congrats Ryan!
[10:18pm] * RyanRichard has heart attack
[10:18pm] <Cowboy_Shane> congrats
[10:18pm] <RyanRichard> thanks all :D
[10:18pm] <gokesta> congrats to you there ryan
[10:18pm] <stompah> Congrats, enjoy the monitor
[10:18pm] <Robjustice> Congrats Ryan...Enjoy it..
[10:18pm] <Tismedt> I missed it by 1
[10:18pm] <gokesta> enjoy the new monitor
[10:18pm] <RyanRichard> :D
I'm not real excited about this taking place the way it did, however da-gokesta would be the only member who could protest who should've been included, or any member who could not get in the IRC room and watch the drawing. He requested 3 numbers, 2 of which were not taken. I checked my email shortly after gaining access to the IRC channel, for any last min entries, and sure enough there was an email from him asking why a payment he made some time ago, didn't get him in the raffle.
I'm not sure how many (if any) members who wanted to join couldn't, and I want to hear from da-gokesta to see if he has no complaints with a refund. If there are no complaints, Grats to RR!

Erm, skip got some much needed funding. Inet pays for the forums now and they do not receive any of the money from the raffles.
BTW, your sig has a futuremark link that isn't allowed. The mods enforce that. You also have a link to stanford that is not permitted. The mods don't always enforce that though. ;)

Does skip not run the forums ;)?
Links: removed, thanks.

Skip has earned the right to earn a few bucks at this point. Granted, this is true. At the same time, it is important to note that the forums have finally found hosting/bandwidth funding from an outside source (and this is a GOOD thing! :) ). Skip still runs things, but financially from afar now (and this is a GOOD thing for skip! :) ).
This may mark the end of the raffles, but it certainly was a worth-while idea.

With the personal problems shadow has mentioned I question if he will want to be in charge of another raffle for a while.
It can be a pain procuring and shipping the stuff, as well as keeping track of all the payments.
Someone else on staff might have to step into the responsibility if we are going to have another raffle.

Well I hope Shadow gets all of his affairs ( I have no idea whats up ) in order with out much trouble. I know how life can kick you down some times. A raffle is something to do when times are good and wouldnt expect anyone to spend alot of time on one if they had other priorities. All we can do is hope for the best for Shadow.
