Hi All,
Call me stupid but I ran a 1gz AMD with a heatsink but no fan just so I could see if it worked O.K. My intention was to only run it just so that the motherboard would startup and I'd get a signal to my monitor then I was going to switch it off. The chipset fan on my KT7A motherboard ran for about two seconds then stopped. No signal to my monitor. I then took the processor out and looked underneath it. The sticker stuck underneath the chip was browned and looked like it was burnt. It looks like my heatsink wasn't latched on properly to the processor.
My question is - can this processor be burnt out in literally 2 seconds? I find it hard to believe - as even a soldering iron takes about 6-10 seconds to get hot.
I am hoping that this was a faulty processor so I can get it replaced but hell if this is what happens to a processor running at normal speed I'm not going to try to overclock it at all.
The shop that I bought it from won't replace it - so i'm going to send it back to AMD to see if they can test it.
The processor still gets hot when I run it with the heatsink and fan so it's not completely dead is it?
Someone please say it's a faulty chip.

I think first you would have to know for sure that your not having a MB problem chips when fried tend to be brownish in color obvious sighns of overheating maybe even some solder that may have melted it doent seem that you could fry a chip in 2 seconds though as a matter of fact with a HS mounted properlty theres no way it fried in 2 seconds,[what do you mean it looks like it was not mounted properly] its hard to say but i would lean towards it being a bad chip. Are you sure you didnt have to much CV going to it when you tried to boot? OH WELCOME TO THE FORUM
your pc when fixed will do just fine overclocked and i would recommend overclocking to anyone who wants a better PC :) OH i think the store you bought it from is a pile of you know what my first thunderbird 1g was bad and they took it back no problems if it never posted and you havnt modified it theres no reason they should not take it back there is always a certain percentage of chips that are bad from the get go but i would not have mentioned that you ran it without the fan on or i do see them getting flakey about a return.
