Ok I am posting this for a friend. He went out and bought Pryo and something called cakewalk or something like that. It is not wanting to install on his machine. Seems it does not like DX9

Well I am personally fed up with it. I just need a recomendation for some good software, or even some free basic software for editing and mixing music, either MP3 or Wav.

Please post it here and I will check this page when I get to his place. I am heading over to check out his machine right now.

PS if it matters, his is a P4 2.4ghz Windows XP 1 gig of DDR Ram and a 120gig Hard Drive. We just built the machine yesterday for the sole purpose of teaching him about computers and so he could learn to mix music on a computer.

His last machine was (he was using it until yesterday), was an AMD 450 with Windows 98 and 64mb of ram in a compaq)

Adobe Premiere is good at editing anything, but may be out of his price range.

In college I made an entire soundtrack for an animated storyboard using just a bunch of wavs and windows recorder! lol It turned out pretty good, just required a lot of planning.

Ok well I will keep my eyes open for Adobe Premiere and see what I can come up with. He is paying me to build and set up his machine. So I will see if I can find the software for him. I am guessing most large software retailers will have it.

Does anyone else have any suggestions on software. Price is not a really big concern as long as it is less than say 200$ We just spent 1700$ on his new machine and he did not blink about it.

Try cooledit pro 2.1 or soundforge 6.

Soundforge is handy, like shiyan said.
for just composing stuff using samples of sorts fruityloops and acid are both good.
