I built my first computer a few days ago. I installed Linux succsussfully on it and was able to restrat it several times for different things.

On mabye the 9th time I tried to restart it, the monitor stayted black while i started the comp. There were no beeps or anything.

Please Help.

No beeps? That would most likely mean your motherboard is not registering/starting up. It maybe loose/faulty connections or your psu. Even if the graphics card is broken, the mobo should still make a beep.
What kind of powersupply and motherboard do you have?

Probably a long shot but maybe a loose connection with the power button to the motherboard? very long shot I guess.

PSU trouble seems much more likely, like Bensa said.

edit:

but wait, you said RESTART, which means it was working just a few seconds before the problem occurred...

which makes it more interesting.

Can you clear that up?

Is the computer not beeping after you press the power button on a switched off computer, or not beeping while rebooting from running Linux?

Check the obvious first... Is the VGA cable loose behind the monitor or the computer? Is the power/suspend light lit on your monitor? Or try unplugging the computer and holding the power button for about 15 secs, plug it back in, and try to power it up. It works. Also, when you say no beeps or anything, you are getting fan noise, right?

Nothings loose, inside or outside the box, and yes, i am getting fan noise. the cpu starts and runs through the bios and everything till it tries to load the graphical interface for linux.

Did you short the mobo? It's long shot, I know. Hope you didn't as that wouldn't have a happy ending :(

Then I am guessing something is botched with the xserver for your video card. Did you change any video settings the last time you were in linux?

But I don't think he's seeing anything when the computer boots. Not even cmos stuff. Chris can correct me if I'm wrong...

Have you tried clearing the BIOS? I've messed with it before and had the same problem but I could never figure out which setting I'd changed to fix it.
