hi ,this has been a long road 4 me, but ive leared alot. its an axia 1.2 "c" with kt7a raid , i get frequent lockups mainly when on the net, have to restart pc, about 5 times a day. ive tried everything ,when i overclock even a little it just happens faster! what should i do, i need to do an elimination process but how? what can anybody advise me in regards to bios settings? what core voltage should i be on? should i be using 4 way interleave? and force 4 way interleave ,i have played with em though to no avail. ive swapped many ram modules, new agp ,hdd, case [i know extreme now!] im stumped ,does anybody else experience these problems? all new components , win 98se [im into games] and as i said its not overclocked at the moment,1.2 9x133 ,core voltage 1.75 and its been upto 1.85 aswell
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heheh...I just modified this becase I realized you did mention your running a WBK38...lol...
Are you using thermal grease? how about AS II?
It sounds like those lockups your talking about are most likely heat related, but Windows doesn't help. Try disabling Active Desktop if you have it enabled, you should get some stability from doing that, but it won't solve the problem.
Also, a case fan or two will do you great service.
Good luck, and let us know more about your cooling setups.

Did you do a fresh install of windows when you built the system ?
What are your tempratures ?

yes a fresh instal ,arctic silver 2,all memory bleeders off, what i notice though is when it will lock up ,i can hear the fan speed up so i feel that is overloading, possibly power supply, its an Aopen hx08 full tower case with the standard 300watt psu,can this be the problem?
thanks for your input and my current temp as im speaking is 28.5 C

I guess it could be-but ive never heard of a PSU overloading. I know that if there is too much power being pulled from them that they DO get hotter brecause they have to work harder to get the desired power. That is a strange problem

wow...28C with a WBK...thats darn good...almost too good...I know its a dumb question, but you sure thats CPU temp and not case temp or board temp?
I was thinking maybe your memory...but you got the good stuff in there...you try setting CAS at 3-3-3 and seeing how you go?
In the meantime I'm gonna ponder this...its quite the stumper!

Is it possible that the MoBo may be flaky? I had one do the same sort of stuff to me after 1 month of good service. It just started locking up. I took it back to the vendor and they replaced it and the new one seems to work just fine. Cured all my lockup problems.
Well I had the same problem, especialy when I was on the net (Cable). I found that my nic and my usb mouse were sharing an IRQ, once I changed that i havn't had the problem since. just a thought. Check to see if your sharing the nic with the usb host controllers, that is if your using high speed internet. :)
Try here http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/kt7faq.htm look in the left colum and you will find a instabitity faq for the KT7/KT7A

ok, good responses,1st in sisoft after leaving my pc all night downloading tels me 31.6 C but in the bios tells me 40 C?????? my core voltage is set to default 1.75 but sisoft tells me 1.87??????
im only using 56k dial up so that rules that out ,although a good idea. and for swapping mobo i suppose i can do it again but they will hate me the second time [lol]
so what do you think about the different cpu readings[temps]? which is most accurate? and about the bios ,a few ppl tell me to use zt version .how can i tell what i have .i only see what it tells me in the start up which is 6.00pg
as i only get host clk i guess i have the earlier[so there is no optimum setting
thanks again for your persevearance [hey tt120, your posts have more than doubled since we last spoke ,goodluck to you man!]

so what do you think about the different cpu readings[temps]? which is most accurate? They're both accurate, while in bios there is a load on the CPU so the temp will be higher and in sandra it is basically idling so the temp is lower. Also, my actual voltage is a little higher than what is set in the bios. All 3 of my KT7A boards are like that. Nothing to worry about.
and about the bios ,a few ppl tell me to use zt version .how can i tell what i have .i only see what it tells me in the start up which is 6.00pgWhen you first boot up there will be a long string of letters and numbers at the very bottom of your screen, the last 2 letters will be your bios rev.
as i only get host clk i guess i have the earlier so there is no optimum settingLook in the Advanced Chipset Features section of the bios, at the very bottom of that page should be the K7_CLK setting. If thats what you were looking for.
thanks again for your persevearance [hey tt120, your posts have more than doubled since we last spoke ,goodluck to you man!]Thanks Alisport. Heh, yeah, I talk too much. :):):)

hehehe man i always find you online! and im in oz! do you ever sleep man! [LOL] thanks m8
28C for a 1.2T bird is probably closer to 40 which is what your bios says! my chip runs cool cuz it is only running at about 1.69volts which is low and at 800mhz but I don't think the heat is your problem. I would try with just your video w/ latest drivers and see if it is stable and check the ram again!!!! some ram isn't bad just flaky happened to my friend and he ordered a new mobo and the old stick of 32Mb was the problem after all. he was pissed.

ok ive figured out what version of bios i have "WW" thanks TT120!
so how do i update it and where can i get the update?
the ram has been swapped around alot so id be putting doubt that its the problem now ,just put a big case fan at the front of my full tower ,and a medium at the top rear so the case should be much cooler now,id like to try the bios update and see what happens ,what is the WW like in your opinions???????????????????????
have u tried looking at the software aspect, u say on the net, does that mean "only", like can u loop 3dmark 20/30 times w no problems, can u game w/out connection. i think u need to isolate your problem a little more, could it be IE, is it only at some sites, can u get lockups to present on demand? keep a log, set up the older version of ms tweaku and enable logging to faultlog.txt and see what u are getting. it sounds like u are on the right track in ruling out things like ur hardware. i guess u already tried running everything to spec i.e. reset bios to "default settings" and only change cpu mult., than run and see if problem goes away

yeah i have done all that,to be honest i have been playing games but not too much to be able to rule it out that non online activity wont lock, but for the last 2 - 3 weeks it has been doing it [that ive noticed] its has only done it on the net,im online most of the time trying to find out whats up like now ,or on ebay etc. though i was told today that as i mentioned somewhere b4 that when it does lock up the fan speed increases and nticible amount [i can hear it pick up] seems to be overloading or something ,can be a dud chip, so i may try to return the chip[they dealers already hate me man! ive swapped 2 mobo's already!] but i gotta try it,i was thinking the Aopen 300 watt psu but then it should handle as its also new????????????? ill let you know what happens[anyway i gotta cause i need your help dudes!]
thanks all for the input so far............
Don't rule out the PSU yet see if the store you got the machine from will let you test a better PSU. Here is an example of the differance a PSU can make. I have been using Antec 400watt PSU's for some time and they have been 100%. Not to long ago I got a new case with a 400 watt SH PSU dirt cheap at a show I fugured it should be ok for a non-overclocked work machine. I installed a KT7A-R and a 1.2 Bird. The system wouldn't even run for 10 min at a time without locking up! Although you could do a windows install. As a test I put in a extra Duron I had laying around and it became stable. At this point I thought maybe it wasn't liking the 133 fsb of the TBird so I tried underclocking the bird and it still kept locking up. Next I swaped in one of my Antec PSU's and the problem was solved. The extra power requirements of the TBird over the Duron were enough to trip up a no-nome 400 watter. You have to look at the individual wattage ratings for each voltage as well as the combined rating.
I would still look into if you sharing any IRQ's with the modem, seeing how you say it only happens during modem use, and it was probably one of the last cards you installed which increases the chances that it is sharing. I really think that is your problem. Just double check to appease me! :) Thanks

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its the SUCKY abit mobo that is the problem. I had the abit kt7 and had exactly the same problem was very unstable even at stock speed. Also my idle temp on that board was very weird 25c idle but 50c loaded on a fop32. the cpu was 1.1
I tought it was my cpu that was busted so i took it back to the store and got a brand new one but still the same problem. So i then decided to buy an asus a7v133 and all problems is dissapered and now running 1310 mhz on the same cpu stable as an rock.
also i had the exaclty same problems with the fan speed also!! i bought a 400w but still the same problem.
Also when i checked the voltage i had on 5v=5.18 idle while 4.88 loaded so it was not strange it would lockup on mine.
Also i tried even taking the fan off and the temp never raised over 30c idle on a da*n tbird1.1ghz!!!!! Which shouldnt be possible but it ran for a day without the fan so something was definitly wrong with the power usage when it was running idle.
Btw everything was ok the first 3months then i suddently got that problem.
Maybe some of the voltage regulators had blown???
Get urself a new mobo and the problems will dissapear, i promise its not a problem with the psu, ram or cpu

reinstall windows without formatting.put boot disk in , put win98 disk in then restart .when in A: prop go to d: prop then type this "setup /p i" and this will install windows without ACPI. this will fix everything .I fixed 2 abit Kt7a mb this way .both overclocked 1.2@1350 (9.5/142) 1.333@1507 (11/137). no more lockups.i tried bios, drivers and patches nothing worked. Acpi works, but your cpu temp will not idle down to a low temp like it does now. it won't run hotter either.you can dload software that will idle your cpu.email me for some links.yes it would lock up on the net,but no more.I feel your pain. been there done that

if all esle fails try a 400+ watt power suppl
it solves about 60 % of peoples probelms

Thx for that info:) gotta try that on my mobo to
Have you tried pulling out the sblive card? This could be part of your problem.
