View Full Version : Holy Crap! FOP38 under 49C
Well I was getting ready for my new AYHJA and decided to polish my FOP38 to a mirror like finish. Well being the lazy person I am, I didn't like the sand paper approach. So I took my trusty drummel tool to it. I used a blue polishing attachment. My FOP38 could pass as a mirror no question. I'm using some crappy radioshack hsp. I'm still in shock. I'm running a Athlon 1.1 at 1.2. Can't wait till the AYHJA arrives. I'm still planning on using water cooling soon, but this will be great in one of my other systems.
Oh yeah this is at 100% Load (Running SETI@Home 24/7). I'm getting readings between 48.9 and 49.0 C. (~120F). Amazing IMO. Also at default voltage.
At 1.8V I'm getting between 52-53C. (For those interested) This is also on a KT7-Raid.

Just a thought-youll get a lower temp with less of a fine finish. The polish only works to a degree. AFter it is too smooth than there is no where for the thermal grease to go-but just to sit flat on the HS. If you use a more course grade sandpaper-and leave tiny little grooves in the HS then the thermal grease will actually fill thouse thousands of tiny liittle grooves and perform better than a totally flat HS-thats actually the point of lapping is to get rid of the smoothness of a stock HS and make it where the grease can actually fill the grooves. Not to make it a mirror.

Aren't those temps a bit high? I have a 1GHz Tbird running at 1.1 with the HSF that came in the box and with the sticker instead of thermal paste in a closed case with rounded cables and I get worried when the CPU exceeds 50C at full load. In fact I am considering the purchase of a new HSF and good thermal paste, especially with the hotter weather and no AC, to get it into the low 40s. Why do you want your heatsink to be a mirror anyway? Do you use it while shaving? :)

A tbird running at 1200MHz and 1.8V generates 67.1W of heat - so even if your ambient temp is a scorchin 25C you're still 27C over ambient - giving a C/W of 0.4. If memory serves me the FOP38 generally has a C/W of about 0.25 - 0.4 is definitely way too high. It may be something to do with your temp monitor, although KT7's generally seem to give quite low temp readings. I reckon you could drop the temp a lot with the FOP - maybe using some Arctic Silver paste would help, as might slightly roughening the base of the hsf as Jason suggested. Also better case cooling could help, unless you've already got that sorted :)

Shesh, my FOP38 on my 1.85v 1470mhz AXIA only hits 50C with seti churning 24/7...thats with no case side what so ever but we've had a few 80F days so far

LMFAO... 25c ambient temp scorching.... Dont ever come to australia then buddy.... we are gettin into winter now and in brissy we r peakin 25c during day... quite cool actually :)
My duron 800@950 - 1.75v with a Thermoengine and 80mm 42cfm fan still gets round 52c underload... :(
U r right bout the heatsink lapping... NEED GROOVE NO SMOOTH... i use p800 wet n dry myself...

I notice you said you used a Dremel to lap the HS. My suspicion is that while the HS is very smooth, it is probably not very FLAT. Using any method besides moving the HS across a perfectly flat work area like a glass tabletop results in a curvature of the surface. You may try lapping it again to make it a little rougher than it is now, as well as ensure the the HS is flat. I would be curious to see if your temps would drop.

i agree with coldmaster. those temps are high and i think maybe the hsf isnt making good contact. i have a 1.0 athlon at 1.3 running about 45-47 full load. that's with a fop38. also, be sure to get some case cooling if you don't have it already. that helped drop the temp a few degrees for me. arctic silver is also good.

Click the little "Modify" button at the top right of your post. I use it quite often. :)
