has anyone ever been tightening their block or heatsink and heard a little noise and got very nervous that you just chipped the cpu, come to find out it was just a noise from something else..

Nope... have you checked the socket lugs and the block/hsf clip?

Lucky me, I was tightening the waterblock, heard that little noise, and lo and behold, cracked the chip.

First time I ended up breaking the lug and the chip burned up before I could pull the power cord. The second time I did it, I crushed the chip. Couldn't see any physical damage but it didnt work after that. I learned my lesson though and it only took me $400 dollars in chips to do it. DUH!
