i have a compaq with a slot A athlon 500mhz cpu and 256mb ram. the system just seems slow to me. i was wondering if getting a socket A duron (either 800-950 mhz) and a decent mobo would give me a big performance increase. how much of an increase would i get? i don't really use this for 3d gaming so that is not an issue. i just want it to run faster and be a bit more of a solid machine.

For general system performance getting a faster harddrive may be your best bet. And who knows it may just cure your crash problems to. Of course it is a compaq, so it will still probably have problems =). Your probably overheatin to, those things have terrible airflow.
that user name is really quite unappropriate in this forum

A Duron 800 unlocked is well capable of reaching somewhere in the region of 1 ghz with a decent mobo.. I would think that you would notice a considerable increase in system performance by taking this route
First, I think that your nick is inappropriate.
For your question, I think a new motherboard would definitely give you a speed increase. Compaq uses motherboards that aren't built for real performance. Generally they have other peripherals such as sound and or video included which also degrades performance. An upgrade to a Duron and new board will be like having a new computer.
I would also upgrade to an ATA/100 7200 RPM HDD as well.
These will give you the most bang for the buck.
