View Full Version : Best way to remove the Volcano II HSF???
I heard that it was a bitch to get off (it was a btch for me to get on!).
So does anybody have any tips on how to remove it???
I just don't want to damage the Duron core when I am struggling to take it off.

In my experience, with my Volcano II was that it was simple to attach and remove, with the right tools and knowledge
which most people, including myself, don't necessarily think about
after a while, in my research i discovered the "flat head screw driver" method
on the clip there is an area which a flathead screwdriver head will fit, just make sure it is slanted so the head points towards the heatsink more than the mobo
or else you might slip when pressing down and damage your mobo
so anyway when you press with the screwdriver the clip will find its way around the fastening prong (?) on the motherboard.
pretty simple with a little practice
to remove the heatsink, insert the screwdriver into the same slot, press down on the clip so it is unhinged
while unhinged, lever the screwdriver towards the heatsink to force the clip to go away from the motherboard, and pop, the heatsink is unclipped
i hope this helps
Those are some of the nicest clips to put on, IMHO. All you need is a screwdriver. ****ty sink though.

Maybe that's why Morjo is trying to remove it. :)
I hope I don't crack my Duron core trying to remove it!!!

Can't speak for all, but for the V2, you might have to put effort into purposely cracking the core to actually damage it, and with the right size screwdriver and a steady hand, there's no fear of smashing the mobo. I've taken mine on and off a bunch of times. No cracks, no missing corners, nada.
Did tap the mobo a few times tho... Just dumb and eager.

I use 3.5" floppy diskette to remove HSF. Very good tool.
