I put a recently purchased Duron 650-AKBA cpu in my epox 8KTA3 motherboard to see if it had any OC potential. First I thought that I would check it out. (I had an 800MHZ running and everything was working well.) So I thought that I would jump on the net and check email and cruise overclockers. I am running W2K and had the task manager "on top" watching the "CPU Usage & History". While the modem was connecting the CPU Usage shot up to 100%. After the connection was made but before I launched netscape the cpu usage was doing a wave. Every 3 seconds it would jump to 66% and than go back to 0%. So with only the modem "on" the cpu usage would go up and down. Then I noticed the "peak" was also going up and down. Reaching a high of 66% and a low of 30%. So this wave also has a wave. Strange I thought. Well then I launched netscape and to read my mail. When I tried to send an email, I got a BLACK screen. The temp was 42c @1.67V @ 652MHz. I booted again a couple more times to make it was not a fluke. I could not send email out or get to overclockers with getting the black screen. The cpu would max out and I would get the black screen. Booted up again, tried pinball. That sent the cpu usage to constant 100%. This is a brand new, never used cpu. I think I need to RMA it. Any thoughts as to this situation?

do you have anything like realtime virus scanners running? like macaffe or pc-cillin they reall suck the performance outa the cpu when u r surfing and its trying to scan everything u load. that doesnt really sound like the cpu is to blame to me perhaps its some background program sucking it all up

No nothing else is running. I checked to see if anything was in the start up menu or running anywhere else. But the start up is empty and I did not even have any anti virus software loaded. I did then load norton anti-virus and did a through check. Did not find any virus. I now have my 800MHz back in and it is working well.
