My mums PC is having problems, everything works. but when I bootup I get "the OS cannot be found" it did it randomly before, but now it's stuck like that every time i bootup, what can the problem be ? it's not detecting the hdd, but it's detecting both cdr and cd-rom.

try re-attaching the ide cable to both the controller and the hard drive. If you go into bios, and choose set the primary master to something other then auto, and then back to auto, it'll recognize it (as i've seen in the past, weird, but true).

Could very well be a broken hard drive. I have two hard drives at home that do that because they are broken. Try testing the drive in a another computer and see if it works. If it works at least you know there might be something else wrong. Good Luck! Try a few things and get back to us.

Drive should be set as "master". Look on the top of the drive for the settings key and adjust the jumper accordingly.
