I plan on buying a 1.2 ghz athlon and 256mb of pc2100 ram but i need a motherboard to go along with this. I was wondering what you would suggest?
Abit KT7A?
Asus A7A-266?
Soltek SL-75DRV KT266?

Or should I even bother with a 1.2 ghz and just get a 1.0ghz?

The Abit KG7 RAID board will should be released the end of this month. It is the first Abit board to support DDR ram. If it performs anywhere near as well as the KT7A Raid mobo, it will definitely be the board to have. I am running the KT7A Raid now but will be switching to the KG7 as soon as its released. As far as your cpu goes, the faster the better. If you will be using its potential.

Welcome to the forum

The PC2100 is a DDR based RAM and as such will not be supported by the Abit KT7A, I cant speak of the other mobo's you mention as I don't know about them. As far as I am aware also there is NO current mobo with a 266 FSB as this refers to the internal chip speed of the Tbird which is two times the FSB ( 2 x FSB ).. The Tbird therefore runs on a 133 mhz FSB.
The DDR chipset is currently immature and as such some mobo producers are having problems with them, remember this when deciding what DDR mobo to obtain. As stated by roc the Abit KG7 RAID may be the DDR mobo to wait for should you decide to take this route, but personally I would buy the Abit KT7A-Raid which is a great mobo and works well with a 1.0 or 1.2 ghz Tbird.. however I suggest that you do some more research into this matter and ask some more questions.. to ensure your money is well spent ?

If you must go with DDR now, get the IWILL KA266 or KA266-R. Both support DDR and are solid performers. Even with the advice you get here, however, I would recomend that you reasearch the boards and decide for yourself. Hope this helps:)

umm... how come i have SDRAM on my board then?
the iwill is a KT133A chipset, this does not support DDR.
iwill does have a version, for DDR... but for all intents and purposes, why do you want it? my sandra shows my SDRAM 256mb on this system beats out DDR equipped comparable systems that are running 1000mhz, whereas i'm running 806mhz... proofs in da puddin'

and aside from that, theres way too much talk of the current DDR technology getting revamped, which would force obsolecence on anything currently supporting DDR... as the gains it promised to have, were not delivered. i really don't see it as a good time to buy into this tech.

If you wan't an exellent board go get the MSI K7T266 Pro (MS-6380) this board is great rock stable DDR memorey is required thoe it comes with or without RAID raid is for multiple hardrives so you can make like 2 hardrives as 1.
