View Full Version : Why is overclocking so taboo?

Quiet frankly it's getting really annoying. When i tell someone that i overclock one of three things usually happens.
1.) They inform me that i'm an idiot and that my computer will melt in a furry of flames and melted electronics: See "from high hell to high FSB" http://www.overclockers.com/articles704/
2.) They inform me that i'm an idiot and that my computer doesnt need to be overclocked: Note the fact that my CPU is 1ghz faster then when i bought it
3.) Thats awsome, how did you do it: this is the same type of person who calls me when their email doesnt work
I have a friend who i'm trying to convince to overclock his CPU, he also spent $20 so that Monarch would put his stuff together.
I told him of my 5500 3dmark 03 score and he said "wow"
yet he fits both #1 and #2

I wish i could just let them be, it's just that i'm civil about it, and "they" attack me for it. i dont get it.
People tend to fear the unkown.
Here is a Ben Franklin quote:
"People tend to destroy the things that which they do not understand"
(Probably not word for word, but you get the point ;))

I don't hesitate to overclock my home PCs, but I would never dream of overclocking my develpment system it's hard enough trying to track down elusive bugs when I know the hardware is not a variable. Of course, where the remote possibility that some system instability may be introduced due to overclocking is not a big deal, I see nothing wrong with it.
Some people just like the peace of mind, I guess. Many people are afraid that the computer is going to quit working just because they are writing emails, and the last thing they want to do is to invite computer failure by tinkering with it, especially if the person doesn't really know enough to fix any problems he or she may cause. Do you want those same people that think the computer is going to burst into flames, or consider a Dell a high end machine, calling you on the weekend to help them fix their messes?
Of course, there are also those people who just don't mind spending extra money if there is some perceived gain, no matter how slight. These people would still consider their Athlon XP 2200+ a better CPU than my overclocked 1700+ even if they are running at the same speed. Watch people in a fast food restaraunt where the soda machine is available to the costumers, and you will notice at least a few people buying large sodas even though they get free refills.

Each to their own. People only need overclock if they need to, but people should also understand that if you or I want to overclock then it is our decision. Its not even worth bothering about to try and explain overclocking to some people.
I understand that if I fry something then it is my problem and I am prepared to foot the bill if I mess something up.
Overclocking seems to be getting more popular now though, probably because more people have computers than a few years ago.

My point is that these folks dont even have an open mind about it all.
My buddy i was refering you to said he tried overclocking and his system just got all buggy.
I asked him what he did and he said "I used asus' aggresive settings in the BIOS"
I told him thats not overclocking...he refused to listen to me because i was a person and asus was a world wide company...

There really isnt anything you can do about people with that kind of attitude except just leave them in their ignorance. Thats what I was saying above: people should have an open mind.
OMG! A senior double posting!? Thats unpossible!! :p

What annoys me......
When you tell a person that you overclock your computer.....and the freak out on you like its Taboo and all, and tell you that you will fry your computer, it can't go any faster than what you bought it at......or act like its Morally wrong to do........THEN when you two are done talking........they go out, Buy a crap load of parts for their Cars, and add 3 more HP to it.....just because. They dont' care if the 3 hp doesn't help......they just WANT it.......
AND THEY SNUB THEIR NOSES AT US!!!!!!!
that REALLY annoys me.
( other than the technical side of it ) there is no difference from overclocking your computer, and suping up your Car. But people act like suping up your computer is BAD!
THATS what gets me Mad

People think its hard enought to believe that i built my own computer let alone have it running 75% faster then stock speed.

What the hey... it saves me extra trips to the fountain and a bigger cup to take out when I'm done with the meal. That = exta value I'm willing to pay for ;)
As for willfully ignorant people, I'll try for just a few times to set them straight. After that, they can stew in their own juices.

I don't bring up computers in discussion anymore because I find that nobody outside of this forum seems to care or know enough about the subject to hold a two sided conversation.
this has never happened to me, because the only people i talk to about computers are quasi-nerds, and know better :)

People are stupid.
When talking about computers people are even more stupid then normal.
Think of the stupid people, Don't talk about computers infront of them.

Agreed.
None of my friends are as knowadgeable as me. I don't even bother talking about computers with them. It just gets really annoying having to explain EVERYTHING

When I tell people that I build my computers, and they are amazed, I stop right there. Don't even bother talking to them about ocing.
Now the nerds/quasi-nerds that I know properly admire the uber rig :)

My computer science teacher actually mentioned overclocking today. She said it's "very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing". It gave me a warm feeling. She passed out a burnt (literally) out graphics card (before we talked about it), I immediatly recognized it as having been someone's overclocking attempt. It had a badly placed blorb on a modern gpu (first problem). The blorb wasn't lapped at all, epoxy was poorely placed, probably a good 2 square cm of the gpu exposed, caked in dust and a fan blade was broken off. Tsk tsk tsk http://home.comcast.net/~gecedion/nono_01.gif

... Wow.
People who don't like overclocking are our friends! :D They're the ones who buy the very top notch parts instead overclocking the cheaper parts to attain top notch speeds. They help keep some companies afloat. Think of that. If everyone overclocked, some business would be, well, out of business. AMD, maybe.

i know your feeling. They are people !
i have a friend who uses PS6 and when i told him about PS7. he told me that he is very happy with PS6 and doesn't want to upgrade to PS7
i told him that i will give him PS7 FREE and his eyes are wide OPEN an said OK
and he said he don't mind to install PS7 in his computer BUT he did not know i really CHECKED him to see how full of balony he can be. I never give him PS7 .
My point is some people want thing for NOTHING and FREE and they don't care whether it is overclock or *new*. And when you overclock or have *new* version, they BARK and SCREAM at you for no reasons
i guess that is a new way for people to hide their *jelousy*:)
How full of baloney he can be? I missed the part where he lied about something.
I think all you people suffering angst about being a misunderstood overclocker... you shouldn't even bother bringing up overclocking or oozing over overly-technical things with the kind of people who don't understand anyways. Its just a waste of time for everyone.

Try carrying this hobby forth in a rural area where progressive is the ladies shave their legs. I have learned more about computers and software by my successful and failed attempts at customizing and now, overclocking my computer than the several years that went before. Yes, people know and i get the calls about the emails not working and have even built a few on consignment (dream job if I could make a living). and appreciate the people of this forum for sharing their knowledge and experience because without it I wouldn't be were I am today.
Now I'm starting to read up and follow the discussions on watercooling. Watercooled? 64 bit processor? Hmmm?
Thanks guys.:D

I am pretty much the same way... cept with my closer circle of friends that know a thing about a computer (and with the even closer circle that rival my knowlege (if not beat:D)! But that consists of about 3 people, in my ENTIRE SCHOOL MIND YOU!

As stated before, to each his own. Sure some people don't care to learn more about computers. When you get to the point that it is a hobby vs. a tool you have to realize people will not share your enthusiasm. I see this guy working outside on his lawn almost every day. Is it a nice lawn? Sure. Maybe the nicest in town. Do I care how he got the rare hybrid Chrysanthemum? No. Of course that does not mean I will condem him for it or say that cross pollinating flowers can create gigantic man eating plants. Some people are ignorant though and will knock anything that they don't know about or can't do. That said its just better to walk away and help the people that do want to learn.

the most interesting part is when idiots have computer problem, they call us for help after telling us we are this and that

I have the same problem with my friends. They dont want to hear about overclocking a pc or any computer related discusion but when they start having problems with their pc they call me for help.
I really dont get that.

Whenever overclocking is brought up I am told that I am going to fry my CPU, its totally unnessesary, "whats the point? to get 1 more fps?"
I try to avoid talking about computers to my friends anymore.
Yet they always come to me for advice about what to buy or how to fix things.
Its also rather difficult to discuss certain things with people who aren't so familiar with computers. Like my friend who asked "How fast is it?" speaking of the motherboard i was recommending he buy. Then he got all ****ed at me when I rambled off the stats for him and none of them fit what he wanted to know, because he wanted to know something that doesn't exsist.
