View Full Version : Building a new server? How too?
I was reading another thread about building a server for DC, actually, it was about replacing the cpu in said server. Instead of pirating the thread, I decided to start a new one.
Anyway, what steps does one go through to build a DC server? I plan on building another rig (it's already in the works), and I am just wondering what it takes.

All a server is, is a computer that is dedicated to serving something.
I have a file server, its a 350mhz PII with 128mb of ram.
If you wanted you could spend 2 grand on a xeon based server...all you need is the software, a connection, and a PC.
it really depends on what its going to do... if its not cpu intensive, then you won't need a very fast cpu. It really depends on what your going to do with it. I'm using my athlon 800 as a tv/webserver.
If you have a fast computer for a server, then you won't have too much to worry.
*Edit: what i mean by tv/webserver is i use my 800 as a dedicated tv and also a webserver for my own stuff

Okey lets classify then:
For a PC gameserver, what do you need? (Fast CPU, RAID set up, lots of RAM?)
For a file server, what do you need? "ditto"
For a page web server, What ....
And, BTW, what is a DC server and a tv/web server? (something like TIVO?)
Sincerely,

well I have a server 350mhz 256 ram its slow but it does it for my web site. I know for one thing if you wan tto have a server make sure you have a fast connection since DC can have like 5000+ users

you do not need RAID for a simple server..
I recommend having 256mb atleast of RAM if your somewhat serious about this server. 128 is fine if its not in need of power.
and a P3 500mhz+ is fine for any server really..make sure that you have a good NIC(network interface card), and some nice case fans, along with a dependable PSU..to insure your stability..
I would like to set up a Desert Combat server.
I have a cable modem connection. I guess I should have been more specific.
What I need to know is:
1) Bare minimum specs...cpu, ram, hd...etc
2)Special equipment
3)Special software
4)Security Issues
5)Anything else
<edit>Thanks for moving this. I wasn't sure where to put it:)

Well no matter how well you build the system the biggest bottleneck is not going to be the server, its going to be the tiny upload pipe on your cable internet connection.
That said you want alot of ram(I would say 1GB+), a decent processor(I don't think you need to go overboard here). You won't need a raid or anything like that to run a game server, its not as demanding on IO as a web server or ftp server with alot of traffic for instance.
The october issue of Maximum PC has a 3 page article on how to setup a server and the requirements for different games and connection speeds u need and so forth:) I have that issue right here in front me, becuase I was thinking of making an ET Server but my DSL will not handle it
Thanks Deathknight and Cutter, that's what I was looking for I guess. It's not really a feasible project without a better internet connection. T1 is way out of my budget, so maybe I can build a local server and host some LAN parties:)

In one game??
(Elaboration: unless you are a major gamer, you wouldn't want to serve anyone eles apart from friends to play in one game, so 5000+ might be high..)
