FTP really slow, please help

i am trying to transfer stuff from my main computer to my server, and since using network neighborhood doesnt work very well, i was just using an ftp. but it will only transfer at like 20k a sec. last night, it would go at like 6000, but now it wont. ive tried restarting and stuff, but it doesnt seem to help. any thoughts on what the problem is, and how i can fix it?

Need what you are using as a client and server, and how your network is setup (router/hub/switch/etc). Also basic specs on the machines (cpu/ram).

nm, right after i posted this, i tried changing workgroups, and it let me access the computer through network neighborhood again. i dont know what the deal was before. must be something with my schools network. anyway, i just mapped a drive, and i transferred like 25gigs of stuff at like 8000k/sec. so who knows that the problems was before. thanks anyway.
