If it can be written at 8x, with a 8x + writer like the Plextor you'll probably end up writing 8.5GB in around 15 minutes, which averages out to be roughly 9.5MB/s. With the fastest CD writers we have now 700MB takes less than 3 minutes, which is no more than 4MB/s when you average it out.

Mmmmmm 8.5GB of storage. Well at least I can drool over my plextor 8x one for quiet a while and be happy with it. :)

sounds very awesome but my fear is that the $180 dual-format drive i just bought 2 months ago will not be able to burn dual layers discs, forcing me to buy a new drive to use them. i hope that isn't the case. dual layer is what i wanted all along!

edit: confirming my fears

This shows almost the same performance as that for dual-layer DVD-ROM discs. It means that DVD-R discs supporting this technology can be played back on most existing DVD players, and DVD recorders supporting this technology will be developed easily.

oh well, i guess by that time my 2x write speed will be slow anyways, so it'll be time for an upgrade :D

man that sucks. guess I should wait a bit before buying a DVD burner then.

Probley won't be out til sometime next year. Then again probley cost an arm and a leg for those drives let alone the media.

*looks over at his DVD+RW disks* 15 Pack = 50 bucks

*now looks over at his DVD+R disks* 50 pack = 100 bucks

*looking into the near future DVD+R 8.5GB disks* 15 pack = 60 bucks :eek::eek:

When dual layer comes to the market someone will link to the Blue Laser Dual Layer 24X burner that will write 30G in under 5mnts.

Will these be read by standalone dvd players?

You know, in case I want to put family video on to dvd of course. :D

I should think so. The problem is only with writers, if there is one.

There are already dual layer DVDs on the market, when you see a DVD that is more than 4.7G that more than likely dual layer.

yeah, I think they are DVD9s. single layer is DVD5. Most movie DVDs are DVD9, which makes piracy harder (but doesn't stop it).

I wish both sides of this silly format war would just decide on a single format. Even though I know this will never happen it would just make everyones life so much easier.

the thing is, I think both sides (each with quite a few large coorporations) have invested a lot in their format, and therefore don't want to give up.

I remember reading an article at I think cdfreaks, in which the author explained why the + format was better.

but most burners that are released now do support both formats, so it's not that big a deal. thank Sony for that development.

You can bet on the + format being better supported since billy boy decided his OS will go with that format.

shiyan - I'm just a Tifosi that loves that sequence of corners, I also like Eau Rouge & Pouhon;) You guys got to allow the advertising back for one of the best tracks to come back. I don't think its over, we are at a difficult position were its up to us not to lose it & we have no control over the situation.

wow! I did not know MS had gone with +.

I could not believe it when they announced at the beginning of this year that Spa was not on the Calender. At the moment Spa is on for 2004, but I think it has yet to be confirmed.

It is a real shame that there aren't more F1 races in N. America. Kind of a bad situation at the moment, with Canada out, and Indianapolis not being that profitable for the organiser. It is a world championship after all, so they should definitely have a lot more races in N. America.

I think I'm gonna change my location now.

Just a Note:::: The original DVD standards (this is back when the Pentium 200MMX was king) contained a dual sided dual layered disk capable of about 17gigs. Anyone remember that? And gee how long has it been till they even ANNOUNCE a dual layer DVD. :))

Gotta love 'modern technology' huh??

Smile. . Its old news.

well I think they have been making dual layer DVDs for several years now. It is writeable dual layer DVDs which are new.
