I moved from california to vermont over the summer and I have my computer out here now but none of my software cd's with me yet.

Today I ran a virus scanning program and it removed one infected-file and then I did a restart. When it started to boot into win2k it said that it was missing a certain file needed to start up and that it couldn't boot until I put in the win2k cd or start up floppy.

Problem is is that I don't hve any of my stuff out here yet to repair it and everything I need is on my drive with win2k and I'm pretty much screwed without it right now. Currently I'm using my other hard drive with win98 on it but I don't have anything on it and I need to type up a paper for tomorrow which I can't do on this drive so it's pretty important for me to get the win2k drive working.

Is there any place online that I can download the win2k start up floppy? Or emergency repair disc?

You might be able to find the startup floppies, but you won't be able to repair with that... the actual files you need are most likely to be found on the CD.

why not try a free productivity suite like OpenOffice for the time being?

Otherwise you are stuck with wordpad, or notepad...

well I went over to a friend's house and borrowed his win2k disc but I can't get it to do look at the system files and see what needs to be repaired. Also I guess I don't really know how to go abut this either on repairing system files.

you start up from the CD, and press R when it gets to the screen with the 3 choices.

then you just follow the instructions for it to do a fast repair, and ask it to locate your Windows 2000 installation.

says that I need ERD but I don't have it so I choose the option to search for win2k on it's own but it's says that it can't find it and doesn't give any choise or way for me to point it to it.

that sucks... something is wrong then...

if you choose install, it will search for previous installations and should also find your previous installation.

if you ask it to repair for you at this stage, it is like doing an upgrade. all your programs will still be there, but you'll have to reinstall drivers, patches etc.
