so 52x or 30k rpm is the max for cdroms. Got that. So why don't they start putting in multiple lasers that are synchronized so that you can read a cd faster? Are there cdroms like that?

Just one more laser would double the speed at which you could read. The first laser could read one half of the file and the other could read the latter half of the file. Anyone got links to research on this or something?

maybe it is has something to do with the way the file is read.

it is probably very hard to put implement these ideas, due to the fact that you need the laser to jump over tracks, and you also need to get the two lasers working together perfectly for them to split up the reading of the file.

it probably costs too much to implement, and due to the lack of demand for ever faster CD readers, the manufacturers don't bother with it.

He said it. Kenwood did this by using a swath of 6 beams in their TrueX drives. I have a 72x TrueX here that turns at 12x speeds and is perfectly silent. The ZEN technology came right as people were buying DVD drives instead, and for some reason, it's never returned. They stopped making ZEN drives in early 2001.
