View Full Version : why isn't there an Internet Connection Speed poll?
Why doesn't someone make a poll for the speed of everyone's internet access?
we could for example use the CNET bandwidth meter, or just have categories like dial up, isdn, dsl, cable, satellite, T1, T3 etc...
what do you think?
anyway... this is what I get at my university room: 1382kps
no p2p allowed though, and I think the upload speed is same as download speed
cable at home is roughly 700~800kps, but upload speed is limited.
adsl at parents office is roughly 300~400kps, also upload speed limited.

that's an OS X theme you're seeing...
We havent had a poll but we did have a thread wree everyone listed and showed screen shots of there speed tests. The thread had a title something like "who has the pimpest internet connection" or something along those lines.
:)
I'll go look for it then.

I had a few downloads and an upload going when the test was going, so I'm a bit faster than this.

There have been lots of these threads in the past, including a few polls on speed and connectivity.

No idea what anyone else on my network was doing, but my comp was idle. That's about average speeds for me.
EDIT: I'm using Cogeco Cable
some amazing speeds I see! what kind of connections are you guys using?
where is the webpage you guys are showing?
edit:
thanks for the link mbentley!
this is testing using that page:

upload seems a bit low.

Pfft. Fake download speeds are easy:
http://ocimg.blackpacket.net/fake_download.gif
Those aren't even a challenge to fake. (that one's real, no photochopping). I can also fake dslreports speed reports too.. I just don't see the point.. wow.. fast..

Pray tell how you did it. Proxy server? the "9.4..MB/s" sounds a lot like the practical limit of a 100Mbps LAN...
cool. when I use a local (Belgium) internet speed tester, I get much higher results.
http://www.student.kuleuven.ac.be/~m0324684/bandwidth3.jpg
roughly triples both upload and download speed.

I'm too lazy to do a speed test, but my downstream is 10 mbps and upstream is 1 mbps. Anyone on Optimum Online in the NY, NJ, CT area can confirm.

I know its easy to fake.. if I felt like it I would, but those two are honest to god legit, tested again an hour later and it showed a much mear realistic speed. so I dunno. But I did download a 25 meg file in 2 secs last night.
And thats the problem with the internet, its so easy to fake stuff no one believes anything anymore.

all you gotta do is get the script that allows you to measure BW, set it up locally, and run the test ;)
I won't bother showing my pitiful 56k(ahem 44ish k) connection
But my friend has cable and there's very few people on the line thats in his neighbourhood, this is is average speed:
http://www.theforumisdown.com/uploadfiles/0103/wowie.jpg
BTW... I cannot get DSL because my frikin telco is in court with AT&T over line ownership crap.... I just found that out today after calling them constantly for the past year

It could probably be better but for some reason the network connection is limited to 10Mb/s :(.

i once tested my cable at well over 6Mbit. that was right after comcast took over AT&TBI and they were messing with the lines, upload stayed at 256Kbit though.
my normal speed hovers between 1.7 and 1.8Mbit (anyone on comcast cable should have the same bandwidth).

Well, it's very simple. I download that file from ftp.redhat.com. That's it. As far as my browser knows, that's exactly what's happening.
I just fooled it into thinking that ftp.redhat.com is "localhost". In my hosts file, I redirected the website ftp.redhat.com to localhost. That way, when my browser requests the file when I click the link, it just connects to the webserver I have running. For the file, I just found a file with a similar file size, renamed it, and created the exact same path, and put the file there. The download screen behind it was a nice touch, that was downloaded before I switched ftp.redhat.com to localhost, and was used to start the download.
The speed is just a co-incidence that it was approx. a LAN speed. The reason it took so long (should be about 30MB/s) is because I accidentally saved it to my H: drive, so internet explorer downloaded it to my C: drive, and then moved it to my H: drive :( Also, I used a file that couldn't be compressed.. had I used a 690mb empty file, it would have gone at light speed if it was moving between harddrives on different chains.
Simple, huh?
Try this one, it's even easier:
http://ocimg.blackpacket.net/fake_dslreports.gif
Answer=my squid proxy. Just do the test twice, it uses the same data, so it doesn't re-download it

We seniors COULD make a poll but we're only allowed 4 selection boxes,

I had one going a little while ago, but it fell off the first page into the pit of archives that no one looks through:
