What happened is I was hooking up a fan bus. turned the system on to make sure it worked then proceeded to put the front of the case on. All of a sudden while I was doing this the monitor went on stand by, like when you restart your pc. Then I smelt something burning! Hell my dad could smell it from about 6ft away! I dont know what it was but ever since then the system wont post.
I've tried new Ram, video card, PSU, and nothing. I cant try a new cpu or motherboard yet cause I dont have an extra to try. I dont know if a wire broke loose on the fanbus and shorted something out or what? Nothing looks out of the ordinary, and nothing looks burnt!
One thing though when I took off the Orb to take a look at the cpu, I noticed that 2 corners of the die were sort of smashed a very little bit. I 'm sure it's been like that since the orb was installed.

Any suggestions? I will be playing around with it later to see if maybe I can get it working but I doubt it.

Good news! I took everything out except for the vid card, cpu, and ram. And it posted! WOHOO! Man I'm so happy. After looking at the cards I noticed a burnt spot on the modem (motorola 56k pci modem). Thats awesome it's the modem that fried! I have an extra modem lying around so I threw it in and all is well.

Man I thought I was gonna have to dish out some cash! Thank god I didnt have to. That would have been my upgrade going inside his box to fix it.

yeah my aunts fried about a week ago. it was during a massive electrical storm so that may have been the culprit. popped in the new one (twice the size ofthe old card lol) and its all good.
congrats on your luck bro!

A modem frying that is interesting. As others have said be glad it was not the mobo or cpu.

Oh, I'm very happy about it! I don't WOHOO! For nothing!

Especially since I'm in the process of selling my BE6-II, PIII 800E and converting over to AMD! If I would have fried his cpu or board, That would have been my new parts going in his box. That would have sucked! Then I would have been stuck playing around with a PII 350 for a while! OUCH!!!
