OK this fridge is sitting outside in a skip, with the compressor and all open to the elements. It has some specifications on it:

r12 55g <-- I assume this is the refridgerant and charge mass
125W 240VAC <--- 125W - that's like 0.16hp, but is it enough for a chiller?

Shall I bother lugging this thing back home or should I let it be landfilled

Oh and by the way - I thought r12 was an ozone-destroying CFC, so what's it doing in a skip???? It should be disposed of properly, no? i.e not in a landfill.

Check that out!

The thing on the lorry is a skip. Just a huge bin really.

Basically an open-top dumpster. The English variety.

And I am guessing from the pic that a lorry is a truck?

You guys in England with your weird words! ;)

So, anyway, will this fridge be decent? I could cut it up and remove the body, making a teeny new one for a watercooler...

I don't know much about phase change cooling, but i am pretty sure r12 is hard to come by, here in the states anyway

You can change the refrigerant to another but remember r134a oil is not compatible with r12 oil if you chose this refrigerant you will need to vacuum it all out.

'cos I'm fairly sure it's illegal? I was about to ask permission but it was gone :(

Oh well, there's a dump site near here with lots of old fridges muahahah

From what I've heard, .16 HP is quite weak, and compressors from fridges/freezers aren't very good at keeping up with constant heat loads, since they're not designed for it, and can possibly fail under continuous use.

yes it will be better to look for 1/5 to 1/3hp better cooling

yeh, i got popped for grand? vandalism, because a stoopid friend lit a dumpster on fire, and i was the only one they could catch
and blame it on. i guess the simple paint coat for the thing that got ruined cost over 1g?!
anyhoo, most businesses DO own there own garbage bins..
and it IS a crime to take anything from it, legally you could be starving and take a banana peel and be wrung up on charges.

welcome to america eh?

cheers.
