Shims could help you protecting the core from being crushed, but sometimes don't work.

and if you buy a shim that was meant for a Thunderbird and put it on a newer CPU, the CPU gets fried.

so my advice is not to use shims, and just be careful.

Ha Ok!!! I've got one but looks like I am just gonna be careful because I dont want to fry it either.

IMHO shims are not neccessary if you take your time and install the heatsink properly. Firm, EVEN pressure is the key. Thats all the shim is going to ensure anyways.

What can you possibly do wrong installing a heatsink?

I remember a friend who fried 4 CPUs in a row 2 years ago within a timespan of 2 months! Must be a record.

First was a Thunderbird, due to a faulty power supply. He said that somehow his whole case was electricuted. Second was a Palomino, due to a faulty Epox mobo. Third was my 1.4 Thunderbird, testing that Epox mobo. Fourth was his 1900+ due to not tightening the screws on his PAL8045. He thought the heatsink was on tight, but in fact it was only touching the four pads.

I helped him with mounting the Alpha when it came to the 5th processor.

I had to replace my 1.4 with a Palomino 1800+, which was around the time I was really into running 3DMark2001, and bought peltiers to fool around with. I got that 1800+ to run at 1800Mhz, then baked it using the peltier. (forgot to turn off the peltier power supply).

It all seems so funny looking back.
