View Full Version : cpu gone bad?

my cpu used to go to 1000mhz from 800 with 1.75 volts, I recently took off the old thermal glue and put on some new stuff, now when I try 1000 it boots up fine but when it gets to windows loading it sais there are disk errors. What's the problem here, heat? I have no clue, all I can think about is the fact that there might be some non-static cotton swab, tiny little bits of it on the cpu, i thought i cleaned the majority of it up.... either way I want my system back at 1000, it must get there.

Hmm - have you noticed any change in temps? You could try cleaning the cpu again and reapplying the thermal paste see whether that helps. Also you could try raising the voltage - I know this isn't what you want to do, but 1.8 or 1.85V ought to be plenty seeing as you can nearly get into windows on 1.75V. If that doesn't help, and your temps are still ok, it could be something else - just try and think whether you changed anything else. Could possibly be the psu dying - if there's some voltage spikes then 1.75 might not quite be enough. On my machine I can run a gig at about 2.2V, but every now and then the voltage drops to about 2.14 and it'll crash - so I have to set it to 2.27 to make sure that when it dips (to about 2.22) it can still run.

I had a similar thing happen to my old 600 duron, for a while it would run 952, then it start saying boot disk errors. So i slowed it down to 880 and it worked and then that start giving me problems, eventually it completely died. I would suggest running it at a very modest overclock or you might kill it like mine, but if you do want to run a risk, then up the voltage to 1.85 and get more substaintial cooling if needed.

Hmm - just thinking, I had a similar thing with my duron for a while (used to run 1000, eventually had to back down to 950 due to increasing instability), which I fixed by rubbing the pencil off the bridges and switching to silver paint. If you're using pencil to unlock your cpu it might be worth redoing the bridges - though of course it can be a right pain to unlock them with a pencil, so it's a question of whether you can be bothered to go through the hassle of unlocking it again when it may not solve the problem... just a though.

Definately redo the bridges. I had a problem like that w/ my 1 gig T-Bird. It'd hit 1200, then 1150, then 1100, then nothing over 1000. I removed it and re-penciled the bridges w/ a mechanical pencil, and it worked great again. Its been going for about 2 or 3 months on the last pencil job.

infact my cpu wouldn't go past 850 last time i did it, erased and re-applied the pencil and it went well beyond 1000. I'll redo that right now and then up the voltage to 1.85, let's see if that does the trick. brb kids ;P

ran for a while... then i got the blue screen of death, after i restarted it, i got the disk error message... since then i reapplied the pencil to the L1 bridges, messed around with the thermal paste, no luck. I suppose I can play with the L1 bridges some more, perhaps I should just do away with the paste? It used to run fine, then again I used to have not used this thermal paste. What I noticed every time after the errors though was a small black blotch on the heatsink and cpu, is that fried thermal paste? should i just dish this **** out?

What kind of paste is it?

Artic silver 2 seems to be one of the better ones at the moment.

Has the heat gone up since you changed pastes?

infact i just took a look at it, it's up to 58C right now, way too high especially since I'm operating at a lower frequency at voltage now.... where do i find the arctic silver II? I'm using some generic paste right now, that's probably the problem, otherwise I'm using a silver orb on the processor, and an open case... i'll need to buy new heatsink tomorrow, what do i get?

i think the FOP 32 or 38 is good

Is say up the voltage, but dont get temps too high. Try doing the bridges again-maybe different thermal paste. Sound like something is going bad or maybe the l1 traces are fading. ALso are you upping the FSB, if so then maybe the HD is getting to NOT like a higer FSB-that could be a hardware problem. Run scandisk at atartup and se if it really is a disk error??
