View Full Version : Crunching with an FX51

Well for those of you whom are curious I will have an FX51 system up and running sometime over the coming weekend. I decided to test the A64 waters. I'm having to sell most of my "old" equipment to cover it, but with phase 1 nearing a close I think it's a good time to clean house and shrink my farm down to an herb basket of potent pc's. Stay tuned for details.

lol, herb basket :D

I hope it crunches well for you, and that it's a valuable addition to your team of crunchers :)

keep us info Tim. can't wait to see how it crunch.....especially when comparing to the trusty P4c. (no flame/debate pls everyone)

*Hops on soapbox and takes a deep breath*

Nah. ;)

I will say I am eagerly awaiting your results TC. With HT's relative nullification so far in astropulse I hope we can still hit the ground running as a team when the project switches over. Perhaps A64 will be the ticket. Thanks for taking one for the team, so to speak, but I don't think you will be dissapointed.

Wallets filled with cash are uncomfortable anyhow. ;)

Well my wallet wasn't that full - in fact when I emptied it of cash I had to sell it too just cover the cost ;)

Are you referring to the fact that BOINC automatically divies out WU's to multiple prcessors?

No, as I understand it HT does not help astropulse. That is, it takes longer to do two work units at once than it takes to do 2 consecutively. TC will be able to tell you more detailed information as he is where I am getting this anecdotal evidence from.

It should be interesting to see what kind of results this CPU can produce....:)

Well, doesn't that just suck all! Maybe I shouldn't be so worried about not being able to afford a P4C rig for SETI!

Actually while running the astropulse linux client with HT disabled it took about 4.5 hours per work unit. With HT on and two work units being processed it takes about 5.5-6 hours per unit, so I would say that HT is still good for astropulse, but the times have gone up compared to seti 3.03.

Did I ever mention how much I really think you stink ? :D

Just kidding bro, but dam, wow, I don't know what to say, care to see how it games too for us ? :D

Congrats on being the envy of my eye yet once again, I cannot afford to play the upgrade game with you though god my heart is willing my need to live in a house instead of a cardboard box is just far too overwhelming to give in.

Man, speechless...

Good luck on that! :)

If I don't sell the rest of my old hardware I may be living in the dog house out back until my wife lets me back in :D I wouldn't mind running benchmarks for people, but seeing as how I don't have a decent video card it wouldn't be of much interest. I don't have any games either.

Nice new rig TC! To bad on the video situation though. :)

How much time is SETI going to get on that machine? Bet it will have some awesome output.

I'll be giving seti at least 50% of it. I use a dual MP rig right now and I let seti have 50% all the time unless im encoding video or doing something that is multithreaded that I need the power for. When I'm afk i set it up with 2 instances of Seti@home so it uses all the power. I'll be doing the same with the opteron system.

The parts arrived today. Trying to get real work done before I can play with the new stuff.

What in the world would posses you to do work when you can play? :D

don't be such a tease set er up and crunch crunch crunch.

It's crunching finally - at completely stock speed and the ram settings are forcing Cas3 for some reason. This appears to be an old bios version with very few settings to tweak. Anyway at first glance it's 34% through a work unit after about 30 minutes, and seti driver is estimating 1:23 total.

Wanted to post something else weird. I noticed when I first booted the board and poked around in the bios the cpu was listed as "AMD Engineering Sample" under the system information screen. Sounded interesting, but I figured it was probably just a result of the cmos being outdated and not knowing what to call it. Now the system is running and I happened to run the latest version of cpuZ just to see what it says. Well... check out the "specification" line:

Looks like AMD is going to take over the top spot on the benchmark list again :D!

That was just a matter of time:D. I'm sure its going to be a battle forever back and forth.

Well I don't know yet.... after crunching overnight it has completed 5 work units and the average time has risen to 1:46. At this rate it's looking like it may only be a hair better than my 1.6GHz Pentium M laptop. There's some tweaking left to do, but this isn't the Intel killer that AMD was hoping for. In fact it's only about 10 minutes faster than my P4C at 3400 with HT off.

What a shame, all that $$ and it does not outproduce a P4 3.2C using HT.

I think I'm going to skip this purchase.

Well bear in mind a few things. First of all I only have pc2100 ram right now, and the bios is forcing cas3 which is horrible. I set it to cas2, reboot, and it goes back to 3. The spd is supposed to be programmed with 2.5, but it doesn't appear to pick that up on auto or manual. I'm going to order some pc2700 and see if the newer bios may also help. This bios doesn't even have multiplier control. I think if I can overclock it to around 2400 and get the ram tweaked it will be a few minutes better.

Ewww get the 3200 so it would run at 200 fsb...

2400 on air? Aw comon mortgage the house and get a Prommie.

Hell the registered 3200 ram is almost as much as the prommy....

TC, do you have the SETI bench at ~2.4?

TC

No haven't benched it yet - just been playing with different bios settings and burned out the fan on the stock cooler so it's not in great shape right now. I ordered corsair registered ddr400 last night and the adapter kit for my swiftech block. Maybe by this coming weekend I'll have it running with pc3200 ram and watercooled. This sucker redefines the meaning of a hot cpu. It gets up to 160F with 1.6 volts.

Crazy, everything I read said it was quite cool running. Don't remember how voltage affected things though.
