G'day,

I have a 1.2GHz Athlon on a MSi K7T Pro 2-A with a 'Super Orb' heatsink and fan.

I noted system halts at 53 deg C. (Case apart, the system seem s OK and runs at 47 deg C).

Any suggestions (apart from leaving the case open!)?

I would get a different cpu cooler. something heavy like a Vantec.

Also I would check you ventilation. Make sure you have a fan in
the front blowing in and a fan in the rear blowing out.

Also check to see if you have any obstructions inside the case.
Things like lots of wires and ribbon cables that maybe blocking
air flow.

The ORBS were good for their time-I have GORB and they are not good by any means-yes they are rated to ahndle AMD cpu's but that is for a max temp and no overclocking. To get it up beyond default speed and lower temp dramatically. Get a FOP32 or a FOP38. CAK, WBK, anything like that also which everone you choose-lapp it-that means sanding it with a fine 800-1000 grit paper to make it smoother and more evenly flat-it makes better contact with the cpu. Also use decent thermal grease in between-no generic stuff-use at least Artic Silver and if you can get it Artic Silver 2. Trust me youll be happy- This is the CAK38 a personal favoritve of mine

U should get some case cooling for that tower, I think that would help u a lot. I think ur system crashes after some time, because at that time all the air in the case has been warmed up, and then the Super Orb uses hot air to cool the HS = BAD. I think u should try that first and see if that helps. If it isn't enough, change ur CPU cooler, but be careful not the chip the CPU when removing the Orb.

I agree that you need a better hsf.

I also think that since you see such a big difference with your case opened, that you would benefit more If you get more air running through the case. In one of my cases I cut out the small fan holes and put in a 90mm fan in front (sucking in). I added an 80mm fan to the upper rear (blowing out). Along with my power supply fan. I now have the same temp inside the case as out and it brought my cpu temp down about 8 degrees.

Well if I were You i would take that Orb off NOW... Then look at ur chip to see if it is cracked or if some of it has been rubbed off. The Orb will crack it, it happen to me. Then look at getting a Way better cooling, i have that chip and i'm in the same boat. I am using a Volcano 2 and it is good for now and not to mention it is certified my AMD for that chip. But what ever u do get that Orb off. I also have my case open too and it works good, then i put in about 4 standard case fans and now have the case closed and it runs like the case is off. I have a larger Antec case with 1 fan blowing out on the front and 3 blowing in. I also have a HDD cooler too. I run raid. They are nice and cold.

As I have a similar set up and my max temps are 12 to 14C lower(no, I do not live in the arctic) I would venture to say that Orbs blow chunks. Get a descent HSF, Vantec FCE62540D=$20 and others. here is a review;

Also, your link said logical set up for fans, there is sometimes no logic in O/Cing. Check this site for info on the "logical" air flow;

hope this helps and have fun.LOL

Thanks Sniper, you were correct--the chip was chipped.

Definatly a better hsf. I suggest OCZ Copper Gladiator. It perfromed almost as well as the $80 Swiftech 462-A in a hsf roundup at athlonoc, but the gladiator only costs $30. Here is the link for the roundup http://www.athlonoc.com/hsfroundup1.php
The OCZ Gladaitor is available at www.overclockerz.com
