I have a Duron 800. Last night while fitting my new fan on it I accidentally scraped the edge of the core TWICE. After the second time I could see a lot of metal "sand" in the thermal paste. After that it wouldn't start up. Tried cleansing it with alcohol, and removing the thermal paste - did that and put it back on. Only thing I could see now was SPARKS coming from the cpu. I went to bed thinking about how I would survive without my comp, as I am entirely BROKE and will stay that way for some while. I had put the cpu on my desk when I went to bed. This morning, I put it back in. Booted up - it counted the MHZ - WuhHHooooo!!! - then when it was about to load the OS it emitted one contionous, loud speaker BEEP. I found the A7V-E manual and read - it said long continous beeps in an endless loop would be because of missing RAM - that wasn't it...I was wondering... Started it back up - but this time it booted straight into WinME. No probs since. I had put it back to 800 and removed the multiplier unlocking/core voltage raising pencil marks. Now it's running at 800 - and performing like an 800 according to SiSoft's Sandra. I don't have much thermal paste on it right now.

Now that a part of the core is exposed/broken, could alcohol or thermal paste be dangerous to it ? Can I have thermal paste over that area ? And how much more will it take before it breaks ? Only the edge of the tip is gone for now, but I'm sure I'll do the same again while fitting those f&#¤*ng fans.

Oh and the alcohol I used (I at least think there's alcohol in it) was some screen wiping cloths. It says it's for all screens - so I thought that would be fitting. Maybe not ?

I know a lot of cleaning solutions use water in their solutions. For any cleaning of electrical/electronic devices I would use Isopropyl alcohol. Water is a conductive liquid, except when 100% pure, and it takes sometime for it to evaporate.

i read somewhere that putting the chip in the oven might let the die become viscous and reseal itself. DONT TAKE MY WORD ON THAT THOUGH. would rather have someone else back this up or find the link to where i read that if i can first.

LoL! Perhaps, but I don't think I'm gonna do that just yet at least :D
Maybe just running it without a fan for a few secs would have the same effect :D

About water in cleaning - very likely that - that it wouldn't start 'cause of water left on it - and it started the next day 'cause then it had evaporated.
