View Full Version : Help me decide 2500+ vs 1700+ dlt3c
I'm ready to buy my processor now but I see good results from both of them. I've already decided on a Abit NF7-S v2.0 mobo and a 900u heatsink with a tornado fan. The 2500+ costs about $20 more but I'm not sure which would be best. I realize that they both can get from 2.3-2.5 air cooled. The barton has a higher fsb so I'm kinda leaning towards that one right now. Any input would be appreciated.

You probably won't have luck finding a good 1700 anymore. The 1800 is the kicking CPU now. However, I might be inclined to go with the 2500 if I were you. By the time you spend the money on the guaranteed stepping of 1800, you nearly could have gotten a Barton.
However, if you take the risk and buy from a place like newegg who doesn't guarantee, you may end up with a heck of a CPU for much cheaper than the Barton. It's up to you to weigh the risks and $.
Excaliberpc still has 1700+ in stock for $73. Thats also where I was looking to buy the other cpus. Is there a certain stepping code for the barton I need to look for? If not then I can pick up one from newegg for $85.

i had a 1700 in my main rig (till last weekend), and i was pleased with it. but, if i were to go back to the time that i bought it, and do it all over, i would have spent the extra money and gotten a 2500. also, i would get a retail 2500 from newegg, not the oem. its an extra $5, and you get a heatsink, and a 3 year warranty. if you buy neweggs warranty for the oem chip, it is still $5, so you end up paying the same thing. i have put 2500's in several computers that i have built for other people (in fact, that is what i usually recommend they get), and they have all been very pleased. the extra cache should give you a nice performance increase over a 1700 plus, on average, they are very good overclockers. good luck.
oh yeah, and WELCOME TO THE FORUMS

The newegg retail 1800+'s are really hot right now, as brennan77 stated. If you look at the newegg 1800+ thread, you can see that almost every one of the retail 1800+'s ordered were NIUHB's or a stepping with an "X" in it. These steppings are going up to 2.4-2.6 GHz. However, the steppings are not guaranteed, so you should evaluate your willingness to take that risk.

Ya, the 2500+ has more cache. I'm 95% sure I'm gonna get that one. Thanks a lot guys.
