Ok, I'm going to try my first OC project (ordering everything from newegg tomorrow). Told that the PSU makes a huge difference for a stable OC. Down too two choices:

Fortron (FSP550-60PLN) 550W w/ PFC
Sparkle (FSP460-60PFN) 460 w/ PFC

Newegg sells both for $79. Both only have a single fan. Which would your guys recommend. I want stability.

Future system:
Abit NF7-S rev 2.0
Barton 2500+
2x 512 Buffalo Technology PC3700 (Winbound)

You kind of have to watch out for either of those two power supply's as one is for dual Xeon's and the other is for sever type applications with a 24pin power connector's...they will work but you have to have adapter for the power connector to the motherboard...The 530 Fortron is a great power supply that can be had at Newegg...Fortron- P530XF530W...It is the 75.00 one on this page http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=Go&description=fortron :D

Thanks, I've read all the stickys but still am a little confused. I try to find the 3.3+5V, but most aren't listed. And the newegg.com pictures don't seem to show it either.

But everyone seems to say that the Fortrons are rock solid for OC. And at 530W I assume the 3.3+5V is > 230W recommended for AMD OC. So I'll get this one.

Thanks again, this forum is great. The plan is to order everything from Newegg tomorrow (payday), but as I learn more (need good PSU, need good ram, cooling, etc) the price keeps going up a bit. Might have to wait until the end of the month :)

Well if you do indeed get the 530 Fortron you can rest easy knowing that your PSU will handle anything you can throw at it...Overclock till you drop...And the 530 will not even hic-up...Great choice and other than the 350 watt Fortron/Sparkles, there is no better bang for the buck power supply out there that I know of anyway...;)

[B]Thanks, I've read all the stickys but still am a little confused. I try to find the 3.3+5V, but most aren't listed. And the newegg.com pictures don't seem to show it either.

there is no 3.3+5v listed because the fortron 530 is capable of producing the FULL 28A on the 3.3v and the FULL 40A on the 5v and the FULL 18A on the 12v line at the same time...

therefore the 3.3+5v rating is 292 watts...that should be plenty ;)

also, on the fortron/sparkle 460....it is my understanding that although these psu's were made for dual xeon/amd boards...they come with 24 to 20 pin ATX adaptors so that you could run it on a non-server board...

Will this power supply work with a standard ATX motherboard?

it will if you use a 24 to 20 pin adaptor...which according to user reviews of the power supply on newegg's website (and i think a user here)...comes with the psu...

if not, one can be purchased for less than $10

Thanks guys, I'm getting the Fortron 530W PSU. In case anyone cares after reading this site for a week I'm ordering everything from newegg tomorrow (first OC project):

Abit NF7-S rev 2.0
AMD Barton 2500+
Buffolo PC3700 (2x 512MB)
Fortron 530W PSU

(actually new egg seems to be out of the NF7-S rev 2.0. They use to have it for $114 clearly labelled as rev2, now its $112 with no mention of rev but states 333FSB as max. So to be safe might get MB at Fry's).

I doubt they do not have the Revision 2.0 at newegg, all the earlier revision NF7-s are more than likely gone by now...You can call them to make sure...Save you some tax duckies...And if you do buy it at Fry's make damn sure you get one that does not have the little white sticker that tells you it is a return item..;)...I purchased one of the 460's at Directron without reading the item description (returned it) and it did not come with the 24 to 20 pin adapter...It was a OEM not Retail version...:D

Great, more to worry about. For the life of me I can not find the newegg phone number. But in another tread a person was asking pretty much the exact same question, and the newegg sales person he spoke to had no idea :)

It 'concerns' me that yesterday it clearly said rev 2.0 $114 400FSB. And now ways nothing about rev $112 and 333FSB. But I'll keep looking for the number and call and ask tomorrow.

As for Fry's, I can confirm the rev but yeah. Have to watch out for returned items.

I think this is what you're looking for. As far as I know there phone # isn't listed anywhere on their site. I copyed this from an email I got from them a while back. And as others have stated you can't go wrong with a Fortron 530w psu. Also on their NF7-S mobo, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Haven't heard of anyone getting anything but a rev 2 for a long time. But it can't hurt to call & ask.
