I was wondering if there was a way to fool my computer into thinking a remote IP was actually connected on my LAN. A friend who lives behind me and I could benefit from this. Can I do it if I have his IP address forward the right ports, etc.?

you can do it via VPN, port forwarding wont help you in this regard. And what is this for? Sharing internet perhaps? LOL

How close does he live to you? Within 100 feet? Is there a power source somewhere between you and him if it is more than 100 feet?

How do I set up a VPN? I'm not sure if the 100 ft. cable will reach. Even if it did, I'd have to cover it or something because we have dogs + I'm moving soon anyway so it wouldn't be there too long. I have three computers here sharing a cable connection through a LinkSys router and he has two computers sharing a cable connection with a router. We just need my one computer to connect to his one computer. I'm thinking the use would be for LAN games even though we aren't truly on a LAN and for sharing documents.

LAN games work through the 'net dont they? And you could set up an FTP server to share documents.

yeah, but a VPN just makes it so much simpler.

XP systems have a way to set this up easily. It's in remote connections or something, you can set up a VPN, just tell it who should connect to who, and you can essentially connect the networks together across the net.

Why go through the lag of the net when you can run cable across the yard, heh .

If money isn't an issue just buy wireless, I'd think

if you wanted to keep the performance you would have to use 802.11G which is very pricey, about 100-150 bucks per PC carc. and going from comp->wifi->wifi->comp->network is kinda funky, especially when you throw in your internet access. plus he is moving awy so it would be a safe bet he would go out of range.

Wireless is an excellent idea. If you're planning on running cable across the yard, pray it doesn't get hit by lightning. Bye bye hardware. 100ft should be no problem if one of you has an Access point. Connect the Access Point via the ethernet connection to your switch/hub and he can hookup via a wireless adapter. Make sure his WiFi card can fit a pigtail which can be connected to a cantenna (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3052908574&category=45003) thus extending the range. Just assign him a free static IP from your network.

Can anyone see any flaws with this?

if he moves too far away I garauntee there will be object in line of site. which will degrade wifi performance. possibly enough to make just using the internet faster

Ok I said there are dogs in the yard and I won't be living here too much longer. Dogs will chew up the cord unless I bury it in the ground or something and maybe have it go through some PVC pipe. I don't want to spend any money really. Someone please tell me how to set up VPN, I tried to figure it out but failed.

Ive heard people say this, but wouldent this be true for ANY cabling in your yard. A surge protecter dosent stop lightning, especially that close to home.
