I was thinking of purchasing a multi processor system. Do they make any 8 Processor motherboards, or even 8 way cpus? THe motherboard must have agp 4x at least and ddr support, and IDE.

New Opterons will be coming that can work 8-way SMP, so I assume 8-way SMP boards will come out soon too. They'd cost an arm and a leg, but you could probably cram it with as much as 64GB of ram. I'd guess it'd be more than $5K just for the board and CPU's, not to mention ram or PowerSupplies....

imagine the crunching power on that! probably get something like 500~700fps encoding Divx....

Quads are the most I've had any experience with. Eight processors, man, what do you plan on using that beast for?

actually the question should be-what are you not planning on
doing with this beast?

what about older processors? man think about an 8 processor PII setup! none of the processors are very fast, but you could have 8 instances of seti going on a machine like that. i think it would be less costly than lets say two dual xp setups, yet it could get about the same number of wu's done.

Well a pentium pro (which is almost the same as a PII if my memory is correct) at 233mhz (minimum for the PII) gets a WU done in around 24 hours probably a little less. A 1.7Ghz Xp will get it done in roughly 3 hours. So 24hours/3=8 perday per cpu.

So on the 8 way PII rig you will probably get somewhere around 7-11 perday while on the dual XP you could get around 16 perday. Not to mention the XP setup will probably be cheaper since the PII hardware is going to be rough to come by.
