View Full Version : For future O/Cers', NEVER run CPU w/o heatsink and fan

Not even for testing, as you can see from the numerous posts today, a $150 keychain is not a cool thing. Be patient and thoughtful for these poor little chips, they would never hurt you. Anyways, just a thought from a fairly new O/Cer.
I got an idea! Use your finger as a heatsink! j/k It burns really really bad from what I've heard.

Yep, first it will burn you REALLY bad, then when you pull your finger off (out of pain) the whole CPU will explode from sudden heat.

is melted flesh a good thermal compound?
Than u will never forget the name of the gonner cos the name and code will be inscribed on your finger for a long long time.

AMD flat out warns you...NEVER use processor without htsnk and fan...my Chrome Orb that I am trashing gets soooo hot from my processor IT will actually burn you, so I would HATE to use my finger as thermal compound...although I am going to stick my tongue on it to see if I can get it to stick like you can on a cold flag pole...LoL

Do you really need instructions so that you know what the big metal thing is for?

another pointer: make sure you put the hsf on the right way :)

My keychain was made from my waterblock breaking off the socket tab. Not something stupid I did, although in hindsight I should have gotten the dangerden block in the beginning instead of saving a few bucks.

Yeah it was a good thing I had perused these message boards earlier this year prior to buying my first AMD Duron and then Athlon. Previous to this, I had turned on systems without HSF, I usually wouldn't do it for very long or very often at all. If the system wasn't booting I sometimes did this to check to make sure the HSF wasn't causing the problem since I have run into the occasional situation where the HSF was causing the CPU not to seat properly, typically when the HSF was well bonded to the top of the processor.

I first posted this in early June and it is amazing the amount of people still running their nice new chips w/o h/s. I just don't get it. Other ways you can fry your CPU just happens and you learn, but EVERY manual and read-me file stresses not to run it w/o the h/s. The only way I can see this happens is that people are just too impatient. I can see no reason for doing this. But anyway, I hope these guys have learned a valueble lesson.
By the way, how my sig has changed over the past month or so.

To Fishdog3,
If your going for DDR techonology, get the Abit KG7-RAID, it's by far the fastest DDR motherboard on the planet that you get your hands on. Other DDR boards are somewhat ineffient and greatly show it when a Motherboard with KT133a chipset and PC133 beats it. Thats pretty sad but true. Also, my KG7-RAID performs up to 15% faster than my KT7A-RAID, not bad just for the new DDR Interface. KG7-RAID will last you a long time, I got 2GB of ram on mine and its running great!
As for Sound, get the Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1, it comes with the livedrive IR and a remote control!! Also, the newer version which is only in production now has the "Live! fix" so you wont get any motherboard conflicts.
good luck!

when I was building my system, my mobo was crap, not what is on my signature, but anyways my HSF hadn't arrived but I wanted to know if my sh** mobo would post, so i booted up and held my finger to the processor. A good rule of thumb is WHEN YOUR FINGER HURTS THAT MEANS THAT YOU ARE GETTING BURNT AND IF YOU ARE GETTING BURNT YOUR CPU IS TOO HOT!!!!!

LMAO!!
One time I didn't put on the heatsink on an amd k6-2 400 and I booted up went into bios and it froze, so I took out the chip and it burned me and I looked at the back and saw scorch marks on the paper sticker label on the back! It broke :(
I sent it back to amd and said I dunno why it stopped working and I got a new one :)
Today I have a duron 750 and I did it again without the heatsink out of laziness and I smelled the paper sticker burn! and when I looked at it there were scorch marks again hahaha. Cept it didn't break this time :)
hmmmm if I stand out the front of OCers and take the money off those people who are going to burn perfectly good chips I could make a fortune, in exchange I would give them this valuable advice "NEVER LEAVE OFF THE HEAT SINK AND FAN DOPEY!!!!!!!!!!!."
